Drive train fluid replacement

I did mine at ~100,000 Km. Result:

Rear Diff - dirty, a reasonable amount of mud on the magnet but no flakes
Front - almost clean, minimal mud on the plug
Transfer case - dirty, quite dirty, in fact
Gearbox - dirty, did 3x drain and fill three weekends in a row, managing to get ~ 4 liters out each time with a suction tool, last one was pretty much clean

Will probably do at ~ 50,000 Km from now on.

Find a reputable mechanic. Most dealerships don't replace filters for trans just empty and fill.

My dealer quoted 639.80 for both differentals, transmission and transfer case.

Just ignore all the disassembly stuff. There is nothing in the way of our pan (coolers/hoses/etc). Unbolt, remove filter, reinstall filter, bolt back together, fill......

Very simple.

Even easier to do if you replace the pan with one of the aftermarket versions. Even Dorman makes a plastic replacement with a drain plug for $70, or you can go aluminum for $300+.

I did the axles and transfer case at 30k. Rear and t-case looked like tar but I expected that as I've done it on other trucks I've had before. Trans I'm holding off on for now due to cost, I'm not sure about doing it myself and in my old Sport Trac I had the fluid flushed three times and it still broke at 132k so I don't know that it makes any difference on a Ford tranny. I may do it at half the recommended interval at 75k.

FWIW, the only aftermarket synthetics I found that meet the Ford specs in the owner's manual are Redline 75w-90 for the axles and Redline D6 ATF for the transfer case. Front diff takes about 1 quart and the rear a bit less than 2 quarts. You can get them from Amazon.

That is why you don't flush a transmission. Just drain and fill. You will be amazed at how one will do when you do just that

Does anybody know what the fluid capacity is for the transfer case? There is this that was posted by one user from what appears to be a shop manual.

I’ve always done the fill to spill method on other vehicles. I’m just not sure what kind of sorcery is going on inside the Rangers transfer case and don’t want to jack anything up. I changed it yesterday and filled it to the owners manual. Then I started reading on the forum last night and it got me wondering lol.

same here a little under 2 quarts .. and i used redline oil for transfer case and diffs
