Jackery has converted the humble rooftop tent into a powerful solar generator that lets any car escape the grid for a weekend or longer. Although it’s just a concept on show at CES right now, Jackery says it will put the tent into production sometime near the end of 2024.

The retractable solar panels are said to produce up to 1000W when the car is parked and the tent is open and facing south.

I shudder to think of the cost.

That seems like a great idea if it’s functional and user friendly.

This is nothing new. People have been installing solar on tents for a long while. What's new is the factory integration. Seems like a solid idea. RTTs are generally expensive, so... it will come with a big price tag. I would love to see this trickle down to affordable at some point.

Interesting concept, but a PHEV Ranger with Pro Power Onboard would be a simpler and more robust solution.
This combined with a topper camper like topo toppers, gfc or the like would be fabulous.

That thing looks like it can easily catch wind, blow right off, and take the tent with it.

It improves mpg if you go with the wind and it's open... Like a sailboat...

1,000 watts is a bit overkill. They could lose the wings and it would be better (IMHO) and cheaper.

I have a Jackery 500 and it only takes in up to 100 watts, while a Jackery 1000 can take in 200 watts.

The 1,000 watts is so that they can power up their e-trucks while they're off the grid; you just have to accept that you'll be travelling at night, and sleeping during the day, hence the black-out windows.

The only thing I don't like about Jackery is they are to that point where their name is inflating the price tag. Lots of off brand power bank and solar panel companies with reviews equal to jackery, but at a much lower price tag.

Also, the concept is for the niche "got money to burn" kind. You can install massive solar intake on existing hard top RTT's for what I am going to guess is a fraction of what they are going to charge, but you are going to pay that ultra premium for the "integrated into the roof" sales hook.

My first guess is jackery is chinese in origin just like the rest...

Established in 2012, Jackery was co-founded by a former Apple senior engineer, who helped pioneer the design and development of Li-battery technology. An early battery jacket the company developed for the Apple iPhone gave rise to the brand name, Jackery. The company is based in Fremont, California, with production in China, and continues to have an Apple-like vibe with its sleek and intelligent product line.
