Is there any place that sell a transmission dipstick and tube for our Rangers that can be added?

B&M makes one for the bargain amount of $250 ??

There is also a project being undertaken by a forum member to design and hopefully sell one.

I'm going to dremel a hole into the side of my trans case, JB weld on a plexi site glass and call it good.

You know.

That's actually not the worst idea I've ever heard. The sides of the pan are smooth inside. I don't think there's any reason that someone couldn't pull this off unless the fluid level is above the edge of the pan, not sure about that.

Hrm. I have a spare pan sitting here.

Now that I think about it, I really wish I'd stuck the dipstick back in the hole when I had my pan off this weekend. I'm genuinely curious about where the fluid sits in there now. Whether it is above the pan or not.

You know, other than it sticking out the side of the pan:

That would work fantastically I would think. I don't think I would drill and tap the plastic pan, but you could do it with a different sort of pass-through fitting.

Hell, the PPE pan has a port on the side for a thermocouple, 1/8" NPT.

There are also 2 studs on that side of the pan where you could fab up a shield to protect it if you were so inclined.

--Edit--

First problem, at least for those of us with the PPE pan is that the port is on the side with the cat converter, so temp would be a thing, unless you wanted to drill and tap a hole on the other side.

Curiosity got the best of me and I ordered one from McMaster Carr. Don't know when I'll have time to mess around with it, but at least I'll flop under there and take some pictures.

I do wonder if the transmission builds any pressure though. I know they're usually vented, but I don't know how well-sealed they would be. It wouldn't take a whole lot to blow fluid out of that glass.

----

Simple solution. I'm going to use a small valve. So it will go from the valve to the glass. I will measure everything I need to and then spin the glass back off and put a plug in the valve to insure no leaks.

It will be a small batch at first, for sale here, the people who already have stated they want one, have the first right of refusal, they were the ones who motivated me as customers ready to buy before I even made one.

That batch will come with strings attached, I need them to go to people who will put them on right away,(or soon) give feedback on installation, fit and accuracy of markings.

I may have a few sticks with temp tabs to go to high heat areas, I have a temp tab on my development stick, it's showing little to no signs of heat, but it's been cool here.

If that goes well, then the next batch will probably be 200 sticks, if there are changes to be made, then the next batch will be revised to include those changes.

The original price point target was $150 I know I wont be able to get that low, but we will see, the first batch is a loser anyways, all the time money and effort to get this far has been pretty steep.

Note: they are for the 2019-2022 2.3T engine only, maybe the 2023 as well, I have to see one of those trucks.

You have my attention on this endeavor, and I'm in no rush so I can wait for the final product. I would read the install instructions before I would purchase, also at under 4k miles on my 21 Ranger changing the fluid is not a real concern now.

I am ready to service my transmission today. Just waiting for someone to provide a solution. Hopefully that is you Fitz.

But is is always good to have a backup plan. Never put all your eggs in a single basket.

The unexpected happens more often than we all think.

I agree, want to be part of the first batch. Want to do the dipstick before I swap my pan out for the PPE one.

@Fitzmotor I'm definitely down for the first batch of yours, I'm just exploring and playing around with something that might work as well for the cheaper crowd and other 10R80 folks if they want to take on a small project.

I'd have it installed my first day off....so no more than 3 days from receipt. :)
