I'd like to have a pared-down tool kit for when I travel off the beaten path.

Anyone already do the laborious task of finding which specific ratchet sockets and crescent sizes we need for the accessible bits on our trucks? Imagine there's some Allen wrench madness going on, too.

If you were to buy bits and pieces, or scavenge from other tool sets, would you go 100% deep socket?

I looked for this a year ago with no luck. I'd be interested in seeing this list also. That said, I went tool crazy and now have a tool roll that weigh half a ton. I'm not proud of myself here. The OCD got the best of me.

Pre-planning? Maybe they know you will only have 26 a week after you receive them. Just trying to manage expectations, is my guess.

I carry a set of impact sockets in my tool roll, along with other assorted tools that I don't need, but are useful general repair tools in case I need to help someone else...

It includes a small torque wrench and a Dewalt impact (the large one with >1k ft/LB torque.)

I'm just trying to help answer your question since you haven't gotten a lot of specific replies yet. I don't have "working on your car over-landing" experience. But I do work on my own cars & truck. I'm writing this with the goal of paring down in mind.

  • Large & small adjustable crescent wrench
  • 1/2 in drive ratchet with 8mm - 15mm + 19mm sockets
  • Long Needle nose pliers
  • Hose clamp pliers
  • Small mallet
  • Philips + Flat screwdrivers
  • Allen wrenches (or sockets if you don't mind the weight + bulk)
  • Torx wrenches (ditto.)
  • Small pry bar (maybe)
  • "Gorilla" tape / Electrical tape
  • Puncture kit
  • Zip ties
  • Grease/lube

To the "deep sockets only?" question - I tend to ride with shallow sockets + extensions which is more kit to carry but the deep sockets sometimes can limit where you can fit tools, especially if you can't jack your truck up. Just food for thought. I don't see any issue with riding deeps only if you think clearance will never be an issue (i.e. you are lifted.)

Cheers! I hope this helps a bit.

You asked a really interesting question, and Adam gave you a really good answer. The kit he suggests putting together is really smart and thorough.

I carry a small Craftsman kit that has a lot of these things, but to be honest, I am not expecting to need to use much on my Ranger nor am I all that confident in what I would try to do. Depending on the situation, having a cell phone might be your best tool.

That said, another approach is to think about what you want to be prepared to do and build a kit off of these things. For example, what if you threw the serpentine belt? What tools would you need to fix this? What if your alternator goes out? What tools would you need then? Need to be able to change the battery? What tools would you need for this? Etc.

With this approach, you might end up just carrying around a full set of tools, anyway, but you might be able to pare it down to some essentials. You might also identify a couple of tools you would not have thought to bring, like a breaker bar or a serpentine belt tensioner tool.

Since I have a 1968 Olds Cutlass, I built my tool kit for it using this approach. Of course that means I carry a few spare parts, a complete SAE mechanics tool kit and a handful of tools for rewiring things, but you get the idea.

My issue was two fold. First, I didn't want any tools on my truck that would hurt me if they got stolen. Second, when I went to aquire home Depot or Lowes house brand stuff, it was always cheaper to buy the set. With that, I did pull out a bunch of items to leave behind...

Whatever size crescent you decide on, make sure it's metric :giggle:

Seriously though, I go through this every time I take my Mustang to the track. I tend to overpack with tools. A good pared-down list of must-haves for the Ranger would be nice.
