I had an interesting experience yesterday, which you might find interesting, not amusing. I did the first oil change on the 2022 Ranger, 3000 miles, my requirement, not Fords. The filter installation (a Ford FL-910S filter , by the way) is a bit tricky, but not the worst I've done. The original filter came off easy, which is not always the case with a factory filter. The new one spun on easy, but seemed not to go on very far. It stopped and snugged up though. I put in the 6.2 quarts of Mobil 1 oil and started it to check for leaks...oil went out on the floor quickly. I immediately killed the motor, and took a deep breath. Put cat litter down and went and got more litter and put it down too. This morning I went and got more oil and a new filter, my usual Mobil 1 and not an OEM. Added oil till I got a level on the dipstick (4 quarts out of 6.2). Crossed my fingers and started the truck. No issues apparent. The cause appears to be the Ford oil filter, which has threads that are cut part of the way, and then recut midway. Tomorrow I talk to customer service. Entertaining Saturday. I've probably done 350+ oil filer/oil changes (including my stint at a service station during college) since 1968, and never even had a leak.

The one that gets most is the rubber seal get left behind on the old filter and when the new goes on you got 2 in there. Same result though, oil everywhere.

I've ran across threading issues on various oil filters over the years. That's the reason I keep two of every filter I need on hand today. If one doesn't feel right, grab the backup.

I ran across the oil filter o-ring separation issue a lot back in my Chevrolet days with AC-Delco filters. I watch for that problem, but never had a problem with the threads before. One more thing to watch for, but it probably won’t be for Ford oil filters. My extended warranty on the Ranger prodded me to go with the Ford filter instead my usual Mobil 1’s, but that probably won’t happen again.

I use WIX and never had an issue with them.

Never had a problem with the threads but keeping an extra filter is probably a good idea.
Back in high school (I'm 62 now) my bud changed his oil and didn't notice the old gasket didn't come off and sprayed oil everywhere. Ever since then I always check the old filter for the gasket. Only once has one ever stuck on the engine for me but ya never know.

where did you buy the ford filter from?

LB
Autozone, but I wouldn’t expect any responsibility on their part. It is a Ford branded product and they should have some quality control responsibility. We’ll see. I’m more concerned about a turbo failure as a result later on and coverage opposite my warranty.

I wouldn't be concerned with it at all if you shut it down immediately. There would have been very little load on the parts. No worse than putting a new filter on empty and letting it fill.

I'd be more pissed at having to clean up the mess.

My thoughts as well, but I’ve always been non-turbo to the Ranger and the thought of oil starvation leaves me concerned.

As for the clean up, it was oodles of fun. It is amazing how much heavier cat litter gets when it is saturated with oil. Tomorrow I will repeat my Simply Green and water wash of the garage floor.

Oh well, at 72 what else do you have to do anyway.

Sounds lile bad luck with this filter. I have seen a brand new Nissan Oil Filter do that. I wouldnt be suprised if that happened with all sorts of different filters. Best option is to get more oil and another filter if you havent already

Given the number of filters that are made in a given year, even if the factories have a tiny % of defects that get through, someone is bound to get one now and then.

FWIW, in my 50 years of wrenching I have had three oil filters fail (leak). Two recently on my Ranger & Mustang that were Motorcraft FL910S and quite a few years ago that was a WIX.

The two Motorcraft leaked at the gasket. Could have been the same issue with the thread not allowing filter to spin on all the way, I just replaced the filters and topped up the oil each time it happened. The leaks were not bad started seeing a few drops on the driveway a couple days after the oil change and could see oil seeping out at the gasket.

The WIX had a bad crimp between the can and the end cap. This was a gross leak in that oil went everywhere as soon as I started the engine.

The nissan filter I saw leak right away was either a bad crimp like your wiz or a pin hole of sorts.if anything it was definitely interesting to say the least
