My 2019 ranger jerks when putting into drive

Ensure you are letting the engine settle after startup before moving the shifter. 10-15 seconds

I have had it happen twice now. When I started the truck in my driveway and immediately put it in reverse to back out, it surged into reverse like a rocket, so fast I had to press the brake hard but it was still trying to go, tires spinning, gravel flying. Had to put it in Neutral (foot still on brake entire time) to stop the spinning!

Usually I start the truck, while in park, adjust my climate control, put my seat belt on then put in Reverse. Like I said, the 2 times it did this (I was only going next door to the horse barn 700' away) so I didn't take those extra few seconds to adjust the climate or put my seat belt on. So now I'm very careful to do the routine that takes a few seconds before putting in Reverse.

Thank you for your reply. I'll have Ford change the trans fluid while they are checking for the TSB stuff. I wish our trucks had a dam trans dip stick

Update for y'all. I had Ford look at my truck to see why it was shifting hard into Drive. They had my truck for 3 weeks! They said that TSB 19-2052 did not apply to my truck. It turned out that they needed to replace the trans control valve, and then they had to reprogram my PCM to As-Built.

It now shifts smooth again, and all under the Power Train warranty. Ford will get the $1200. bill lol

The only bummer is that my FORScan changes reverted back. I got all of them enabled again, except the DRL. That one just won't work for some reason, so I posted a question in that thread.

Oh, I forgot to mention that none of the Ford dealerships around Dallas have the necessary adaptor for a trans flush via their quick lane. There is no trans dip stick, as it was not intended for consumer to need to check trans fluid level, per a Ford manager I spoke to. You have to have a Ford trans tech change the fluid, confirm levels, etc. Wow, and that trans is in a ton of Ford and GM vehicles and Ford cannot flush the fluid in the quick lane.

Can you tell us exactly where it is located? The manual says on page 254 that you need to take it to an authorized dealer to check the fluid level or for anything else that has to do with the trans. Is that bs, meaning we can at least check the level ourselves? I think the only reason to do this is if you're having any issues.

Page 431 It says the trans should be flushed at 150k miles. So, it certainly isn't very often because I may never get to 150k on this truck. The next owner will need to worry about that.

I have to say I was very surprised that Ford only calls for a flush at 150k. The technology has improved to the point of almost no maintenance. This is also why the Quick Lane doesn't have the adaptor, they aren't supposed to.

It's underneath your truck near the exhaust.

Also, the manual doesn't say "flush" at 150k. It says to change the fluid. Modern automatics do not respond well to being flushed.

I can think of two people who had a flush done on our trucks. Both would likely advise against it.

Drain, filter and fill, drive a short distance, drain and fill again.


You really should stop using that dealership. They are lying to you and trying to damage your truck.

Just had my 2020 in for an oil change this morning, 43k miles. I've been having issues going into and out of 4th gear for the last month or so, where it hesitates to shift. I've also noticed a few times when shifting into R or D from park that it seems to slam pretty hard into gear. About a year ago I had them look at it, and they did a TSB and updated the programming, and it was okay for a while. Looked at it today and they verified the issue I was experiencing. It's going back next month for a valve body overhaul.

Hey friends - so recently I noticed that when I put my truck into Drive, the truck jumps forward in a jerky manner. I didn't do that before and I know I have seen others post similar issues. I had Ford change my trans oil, and there is no way for me to check the level.

Does anyone have more information on how I can resolve this issue? I'm past the 3yr warranty, although I think the drivetrain may be 5yr.

Might benefit from a driveshaft spline lube, a lot of them have been found to be pretty dry.

That fixed my truck. Goes into gear fine now. Valve body was the main issue for me.

FYI - If you did any Forscan changes in the BDY, those will be reset back to As-Built after they re-flash. I had to go back and do the double honk, DRL, tire size for speedo, and bambi mods.

Same issues with shifting after the valve body overhaul TSB was done, it's now going back in in about a month or so for a valve body replacement. The fun continues!

Updating at 59,850 miles - delayed engagement from 3-4 never really went away. Dropped it off this morning for a trans replacement after 5 visits, one of which the dealer wasn't able to verify the issue. Got it in just before the 60k warranty expired...

I live for the day my trans finally coughs up the valve body, drum and jerky shifts, as long as that day is sometime before my ext warranty runs out around 9/23/2027. or 48,000 miles. ?
