Hey friends - so recently I noticed that when I put my truck into Drive, the truck jumps forward in a jerky manner. I didn't do that before and I know I have seen others post similar issues. I had Ford change my trans oil, and there is no way for me to check the level.

Does anyone have more information on how I can resolve this issue? I'm past the 3yr warranty, although I think the drivetrain may be 5yr.

Thank you!

Hi Steve...welcome to the aging 10 speed dilemma...my tranny was perfectly normal up to around 64K...then suddenly, it started shifting hard into second...sometimes, it shifts hard into reverse...sometimes into 7th...no rhyme or reason...I've completely changed fluid and filter but not much improvement...this will remain a world mystery until the end of time...

Did it start right after the oil change?

Mine's just about to turn 29K (Stop laughing Sid! ?) and so far still shifting great. I have the Livernois 91-93 soft shift tune installed and I'd like to see if others with higher mileage that are tuned have this issue. Or maybe you could tune yours and see if it helps? You could tell the wifey it's for research purposes.:inspect:

LOL...wish I could find some information on how this tranny shifts...it's like there's a dual clutch that transitions from one gear to another...then this mechanism decides it's not going to work and goes from one gear directly into the next...one time, I floored it from stand still in S mode and it shifted so hard into second that the rears squawked! 285s!!!

Into second… My truck constantly skips second and shifts from first right into third. Not very smoothly compared to other shifts.
So I checked maybe I have 9 speed truck. Nope. Second gear exists but on drive it’s never on use. Dealer case or normal?
Edit: 10 000km on it, 3 months

My truck shifts between gears fine. I only have the issue when at a full stop and I shift from N to D or from R to D. The truck will jump aggressively and then drive just fine.

I had Ford change the trans oil over a year ago and this shifting issue only started a few months ago, and seems to be getting worse, or more often.

Ask, and ye shall receive:

https://www.dieselhub.com/trans/10r80-10l80.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford-GM_10-speed_automatic_transmission

I found all of these fascinating, but I have yet to really digest all the information presented. Mostly a lack of free time. Software plays a big part in this transmission's behavior, and I have not found too much about that aspect of operation. What I have deduced so far from playing with OBD2 data feeds is that the ECU translates throttle pedal position into a signal called "torque demand" and throws a PID loop around that. The ECU actually deterrmines throttle body position according to it's determination of how much oomph you need. Anyway, here ya go.

I've gotten some chirps out of second gear with mine a couple of times. Every time it has been during a smooth progressive throttle application, rather than stomping it to the floor. My 2 cents, FWIW.

In D it will skip second...I'm in either tow or S so it won't skip...it's like Russian roulette...it's either butter smooth into second or shove from behind...arrrgggg....

I don't know how it does it, but even if it's a 10 speed, it doesn't have 10 gears. There are 6 shift solenoids, so it probably shifts a combo of gears as it goes up, such as 1st, then 2nd, then 1st and an overdrive, etc. And if you didn't know it, 7th is 1:1 ratio, 8th, 9th and 10th are overdrives.

Found this tid bit:
" Six clutches help to engage and disengage the dual-clutch pairings. Shifting the 10R80 does not require unlocking the torque converter."

Good to know it’s normal to skip second on D. Otherwise it shifts really smooth up and down in D and S compared to what I’ve read from some users.
Sorry about your Russian roulette, but I guess we adapt to everything ;)

If you're driving casually, D will skip second...but if you stomp on it, it will engage second for max acceleration...

If you have an early build 2019, it may need this PCM reflash, per TSB 19-2052. This has made a huge difference in mine! The cutoff date on the build of your truck is around the middle of Februaary, 2019. Mine was built in early February of that year. When I bought my truck this year it had around 44k miles. I am now at 55k. I did not really begin noticing the bucking/jerking, etc. until around 50k. Weird, I know...

I also have a Livernois tune in mine and at 67,000 miles no problems yet.(knock on wood)
