Hi Steve...welcome to the aging 10 speed dilemma...my tranny was perfectly normal up to around 64K...then suddenly, it started shifting hard into second...sometimes, it shifts hard into reverse...sometimes into 7th...no rhyme or reason...I've completely changed fluid and filter but not much improvement...this will remain a world mystery until the end of time...
Sid. I've got somewhere around 87K on mine and I get a hard shift kick rolling down the freeway every now and then. Not sure what gear it happens in but it's been going on since 35K or so. I did the tranny fluid and filter change at about 55K and that made no difference. So the bottom line is I've never had a real issue from the bump so I guess it's just normal ops.

Heck, I've had a weird kind of whine that kind of sounds like it's coming from the turbo since the mid 30K's and she runs just as good or better as day 1. I gauge the health of my engine with how much boost I can pull on a nice crisp morning.....still right at 25 psi...plus she just always feels like she wants to run and pounce with that tune installed.....I'm have a warranty till 125K so hopefully anything that wants to break will do so before then....:)

Never I’ve seen it in second while on D. No difference If I crawl or try to rally it. I’ve been keeping my eye on that for a long time. On D I have 9 speed truck.
Mine always skipped second but once I got the tune it hits it.

Erratic Shift Complaints, Valve Body Replacement
Complaints of erratic shifting, poor shift quality, missed shifts, and other shifting and TCC control complaints are becoming more common with these units. As these units accumulate more mileage, these concerns may become more frequent. There may or may not be codes associated with these complaints. The complaints may be difficult to duplicate.

First, check for updated programming for the TCM strategy. About 80% of issues are cured by updating the programming. After programming, perform the Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle and reevaluate the vehicle.

If concerns are still present, it may be necessary to service or replace the valve body assembly (Figure 6). Sticking valves and sticking CIDAS solenoids are becoming more common concerns with these units.

This was a cut and paste from that last posted article on the 10 speed tranny.......interesting for sure!
How do we update the programming in our 10 speed transmission?

Hi Sid! I hope you are doing well my friend :) ....a mystery until the end of time LOL

Thanks for your reply. My commute was only 1 mile at that time, and then that stupid's covid crap I had to work from home. I only have 21k so mine is like new, but without the warranty. I drive it everyday now so the miles will start racking up. I'll be on the lookout for the shifting issues you describe.

Thank you!

If you have an early build 2019, it may need this PCM reflash, per TSB 19-2052. This has made a huge difference in mine! The cutoff date on the build of your truck is around the middle of Februaary, 2019. Mine was built in early February of that year. When I bought my truck this year it had around 44k miles. I am now at 55k. I did not really begin noticing the bucking/jerking, etc. until around 50k. Weird, I know...
Thank you for this information. I will take it to Ford and have them check for the TSB reflash fix.

It is weird with no real pattern. Most of the time, it works fine. When going from N to D, it sometimes will jerk or jump forward, and then drive fine. It shifts with normal driving between the gears and it shifts with me hammering it down, no issues so far while driving. The N to R issue has only done the jerk jump once. N to D happens about once or twice a week. It's done it when Cold, sat overnight, and it's done after driving for 2 hours, so temp doesn't seem to be a factor.

Thank you!

Thanks, another possible fix. I too would like to know if I can update the programming for the TCM myself and how to do it.

LOL...21K? How many times have you had to jump start your truck? ?

Cold shifting has always been a little firmer for me. But I am used to trucks thay hammer through gears, i have always tuned. So it doesn't bother me. Once its warm its buttery smooth.

Hi Mark...mine's recently also started a new routine for the first few miles when starting out...shifts fine from 1st to second then when it hits 3rd, it feels like it went into neutral for a second throwing me forward, same to 4th...bizarre ...after warm up it stops doing that...what a freaking weird tranny....

In the past for auto transmissions, I've seen a harsh gear engagement into D or R be a fluid volume issue. A shift is commanded, there isnt enough fluid volume/flow to make things move fast enough, so the computer boosts the line pressure to the moon to compensate. When things do get moving inside the transmission, now you've got a ton of pressure hitting the clutch and whomp, you get a hard engagement.

Why it does that on your truck could be several different things, from the control valve to the programming, but its most likely not harmful to the transmission. Unfortunately, Ford's calibrations for powertrain are weak compared to the competition and in my opinion, they can't do a good program for the 10R80E. (Which Chevy seems to have no issues with)

Aftermarket tune could very well help that (I'm also running the Livernoise soft shift 91-93) but you could start with a cheaper alternative. Buy the USB dongle and download Forscan, and do a reset of the powertrain module and clear out the transmission adaptive tables. Be sure to follow the service procedure to relearn the adaptive values. Trans at operating temp, slow acceleration up and down through the gears, it does make a difference.

Glad I'm not the only one that feels like the computer tries to mix things up every 3 months or so. Its frustrating, even if you get it to a point where it feels smooth, a few months later, back to crap again. Feels like the only time its happy and working is when its floored.

You're right about that...sometimes after getting shoved in back one too many times while just wanting to drive smoothly, I'd just put it in S and floor it...she does run great in WOT....no doubt about that lol... ?

Into second… My truck constantly skips second and shifts from first right into third. Not very smoothly compared to other shifts.
So I checked maybe I have 9 speed truck. Nope. Second gear exists but on drive it’s never on use. Dealer case or normal?
Edit: 10 000km on it, 3 months
mine skips 2nd gear mostly when the engine is still cold and the RPM's are running a little higher but I have a gas engine and it may act differently than Diesel.
