I know there is a setting made through the dash interface (at least on my Lariat) that allows the camera to stay on for several seconds after leaving reverse. I made that change so I could verify my garage door closed as I drove away from the house.

I know that is not exactly what you were looking to use it for but I didn't know how many here knew you could do it. And you could at least verify that you started out on your trip with everything looking good.

I also don't know if ForScan might offer any possibilities in regard to what you want to do.
i also use the delay setting

I believe MythBusters did it with a '90s era Crown Vic and showed that even then it had fail safes in place to prevent the transmission from blowing up next to you. I'd imagine it's been around ever since the first few idiots did it. That's usually how change happens.
hmm that's pretty cool they had it back then. Maybe there are other irritated girl friends out there that did what mine did...Or there really is people that stupid.

Does anybody know a way to enable a way to have the backup camera on while driving? Is there an interface that will allow you to do so? I tow a lot and would like to be able to press a button and check my backup camera every once in a while.
I think this would be a very nice feature to have also. I wired a switch into my previous pickup (Turdcoma) for this feature and used it daily. If I get some free time after my other car project is finished up, I'll try to figure this out.

My old Colorado ZR2 had a option to turn on the rear camera while in forward motion. It automatically shut off after about 10 seconds, but it was nice periodically checking the trailer hitch and safety chains along with seeing how close people got at red lights sometimes.

Originally the shifter was mechanically connected to the transmission, so a shift to reverse while in forward motion was ill advised at best. But in most modern cars the shifter is merely an electronic switching station, which tells the ecu which drive mode is selected. The computer can override this selection if a conflict is detected.

watching a screen while driving fwd could easily become a distraction thats why.
granted, most people would just glance at it and keep driving, but we all know theres yahoos that would fixate on the rear image and forget they're travelling at 60 miles an hour.

mine incidentally does it all on its own....I have the sync freezing problem that the dealership tells me is caused by the wifi hookup to my home modem and there is nothing they can do about it...so usually the first drive of the day, the screen freezes when i back out the driveway and stays on. then i soft reset it and continue on.
Unless you're a trained professional...

I know the Bronco sport can be shifted into reverse with nothing happening. I did once by mistake. Though, I was too much in panic mode to see if the camera came on!

Someone posted a video here I thought......Ranger going down the road and they pop the tranny into reverse to see the camera. Nothing happened just don't think I have the nerve to try it! See if I can find it!

I've posted it several times over the years. It wasn't a Ranger but another Ford vehicle but they all work the same. I'm still not trying it even though it can be done. Heck even though I've seen the videos before there's still a pucker factor when he shifts. lol

So back to original question!

UPDATE - see attached pdf. It appears LIN4 is a 2 way communication line.
If this is correct - DO NOT TIE IT TO GROUND!!!!!!!!

Redacting my earlier musings.
Pulling the schematic, the camera, as expected, is controlled by the BCM.
3 of the wires are video, 1 is PWR, and the last is "LIN4".
I am making guesses here so proceed at your own risk!
LIN4 is the control line that turns the camera on, as Pwr is hot when vehicle is on LIN4 is likely a switch to ground to enable the camera. If this is the case its pretty easy to add a switch. I would go with a momentary - no reason to try to leave it on for extended periods of time and no idea if this could be detrimental. So a momentary is safest bet.
NOW - whenever tapping into Module line Proceed with Caution. If I was going to try this I would pull the terminal pin from the connector (at the camera) or cut the wire to the BCM and apply ground to the camera and see what happens. Or if someone has a spare camera try it on the bench 1st.
The other unknown is just because the camera is on doesn't mean the head-unit will show it. The shifter probably communicates with or thru multiple modules; PCM, BCM, APIM, etc. I suppose its possible when the APIM sees a Video signal it displays it, but not guaranteed.

Good Luck and if anyone trys this report back!
You can message me for help, not sure I will be any but willing to try!

Hi
Can you expand ponts like : Pinpoint test A please ?
Sorry its not included in my manual. the link in the table goes to the end of the section.
PINPOINT TEST A : THE REAR VIDEO CAMERA IS INOPERATIVE OR DOES NOT
OPERATE CORRECTLY
which is a dead link.
