It's normal and the only time I find it bothersome is when I'm in S mode off road. When I'm going up a steep incline or down a steep decline I like to use S to keep it in a lower gear. I'll have my hand on the shifter and going over a bumpy area it'll push it forward into D. Luckily D has a detent that stops it from going further but there are times I wish S had this too.
This ???

On the shifter?
 One can apparently not have enough dampers. Front doors…you betcha. Accelerator…why the hell not? Every articulation point gets a damper!

there are government regulations that are linked to shifting sequences, and controls.
Ford isnt just willy nilly deciding how their shifters function.
they want commonality for safety and certain functions so in the event of an emergency, you can easily downshift or upshift to neutral without a barrier to hinder your ability.
Ok I’ll bite, what regulations are you referring to?

Yep. When I'm off road I prefer the shifter in sport mode and it seems natural to rest my hand on it. But I curse like a golfer every dang time it slips into drive when I'm going over bumpy undulating terrain!

I've never driven an auto that you can't push from D to N without disengaging the lock. Every other vehicle you can push from D or R to N. I thought it was a safety feature to get out of drive gears with less manipulation (being the adult child that I am, it's a favorite game of mine when in the passenger seat, to slip it to N and fk with the driver).

The Ranger doesn't do this, but you can push from S to N, because the button is already depressed and can skip over D. It's not a big deal either way, but I was surprised about needing the unlock to go from D to N.

Jay next time you're out driving slip it into R. Make sure there's another vehicle behind you and watch their face when the reverse lights come on. lol It'll still stay in D and won't hurt anything. Tom, @SubVet tested this already.

As he was shifting into reverse you could tell a pucker-factor was occurring.

Obviously you have never driven a German designed vehicle. They use a bump switch. Much better IMHO.
You are coming off extremely pretentious.

The Ranger's design is better IMO. It helps prevent accidentally going into neutral or reverse, and makes it easy to get back into drive. The Ranger is designed as a utilitarian truck. Normally when I need sport mode it's just because of the odd hill or for some more engine braking. I Iike being able to slap it back into drive.

Even though it's proven it can be done I still can't bring myself to try it. It'd be my luck this is the time it wouldn't work.

I've done it after reading about it on here, but not a safety feature I like to test too often. I'd be the guy that the safety fails, and chaos ensues.

One of my old work trucks had to come to a complete stop, and foot on the brake to get D or R to engage from N. The shiter would move, but gears wouldn't engage without brake pedal. It was super annoying for a service vehicle.

Why?

Sport mode? Or Selectshift? Are you shifting manually?

If you're shifting manually I could understand. But if you're just using it to hold gears longer why not just use Tow/haul or one of the TM modes?

For me I shift it manually. There were several times I was on a steep decline and even in 1st gear I was riding the brakes. Then I'd hit a bump and push it into D and it would take off faster than I wanted it to. Granted I'm not off road all the time so for daily driving it's not an issue but it would've been a nice feature to have a detent there to hold it like in D.

Yeah for manual shifting it's not ideal, especially off road since things can get a little bouncey.

Downhill sections are the only places offroad where I prefer a manual.

Remember this is a truck, not a German made sports car or sedan. I think Its pretty nice that we even have the option
If you want a German truck, you can hold out for a 2023 a VW Amarok ?
