I think the stock Hankook Dynapro ATMs on FX4 Rangers are P rated, 265/65 R17, right? All the hard cores will summarily dismiss anything P-rated, but hoping to gather some intel here.

Who's subjected these Hankooks to off road environments, specifically conditions more hazardous to sidewalls - irregular stones, tree roots, etc?

Only after I ordered did I find there's an option to upgrade to the LT -rated from the standard P-rated Hankooks. I'm used to P rated 'softroading' tires for my Subura, like Falken Wildpeak AT Trails. Weight of vehicle and camping gear does not necessitate any heavier a tire, for the Subaru. I've been playing with fire where I take my Subaru, hence my Ranger order.

Has anyone here gotten a puncture off road on their P rated Hankooks? I'm going to assume that occurence is very few and far between, but maybe not? I think only a small portion here regularly off road, but any data is better than none! Last thing I want to do is buy new tires for a brand new truck, if the Hankooks are as fragile as a helium ballon. I'd probably roll the dice, rely on the spare if need be and upgrade when I actually have to.

There's at least one thread here about a puncture on the stock 'kooks from sharp rocks.

They were one of the first things to go for me. Between how thin they apparently are and the fact that they suck in the snow it was an easy decision.

First thing I did was get rid of the Hankooks and put on Nitto Ridge Grapplers. They're good for street tires but no way was I trusting these out here in the desert or any rocky terrain. I remember reading where someone punctured a sidewall from just grazing a curb at the mall.

My factory Hankook's on my FX4 were indeed LT tires. I don't think they are good tires, but they are not P or SL rated. Actually, I would bet that a SL/P rated AT3W would out perform the factory hankook. Just my $0.02. I wouldn't hesitate to take a factory FX4 off road, you even have a full size spare ;)

Thanks, and yeah I'm not going to hesitate taking the stock Hankooks off road. I'll likely do a one week off the grid camping adventure in the Oregon desert as soon as my truck arrives. We're talking a couple hundred miles of highway to get to 30 - 50 miles of dirt road, then 100 yard stretches of terrain that necessitate 4 high, maybe 4 low and carefully picked lines. Its these stretches I'm most concerned with, where I usually turn around in my Subaru Outback.

So, you're saying your FX4 came with LT rated Hankooks. Everything I've read suggests either you or your dealer upgraded to those ($175 upgrade, for FX4 package) and that FX4 packages normally come with P rated Hankooks. Do you recall the circumstance?

Small data set so far, but no respondent has experienced a puncture with stock Hankooks. I get the fear of puncture, or the one off anecdote.. that's all I'm seeing so far though. I'd love to hear more accounts.

I will reiterate what others have said. The Hankooks aren't great - IMO they are good for one one thing - MPG. While I did not ever get a puncture off road, I did get a puncture on road, and they sucked in snow and mud. I'm WAY happier with the Toyo AT3s, even though I took a bit of a MPG hit with them.

I wouldn't off-road when them.

Gravel road to a hiking trail, no problem. Anything more than that you risk puncturing the side wall.

I just put my "kooks back on !! but the back story is I am headed out on a long road trip, no off roads exected. I have driven gravel roads with the 'kooks. but I feel a lot better with my Tremor wheels/tires. point being, dont sweat the factory tires, use it as an opportunity to pick up a set of wheels/tires you like and save these for burning up highway miles. provided you have a place to keep an extra set and you dont mind swapping them. I have sensors in both sets, they reset after a couple miles of driving.

If I remember correctly the factory Hankooks are LT tires but still not the greatest OffRoad tire out there.

Can you get a P Rated tire and Go OffRoad? Yes you can I actually used the Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3 in 265/70-17 and in general it did good but I decided not to go with it again.

Will a LT tire hold up better in OffRoad environments? Generally speaking yes but not all tires. The Firestone Destination XT was a favorite of mine in 285/70-17(available in other sizes too). Even with load range E I did not have any issues with ride quality.

Definitely one to look.into if you plan to hit a lot of the OffRoad.

I have the LT ones. They seem to be okay in the snow it’s hard to say because when I was in 2wd It seemed to be a bit squirrelly. But I think that’s me not managing throttle properly more than the tires. (First vehicle that’s not awd/fwd. in terms on deep snow did fine imo. i did some power line trails that had everything from mud to sand and it seemed okay on those as well. seem Fine to me. But the psi of 38 they want seems to make the truck ride rougher.

They are LT tires if you ordered it that way. Otherwise a stock FX4 has P rated Hankooks.

I took my bone stock FX4 over the rockies on a whim to fish the headwaters across the continental divide. Everything performed great aside from a puncture at about 12,500' as we were bailing out from a hailstorm. Granted, the trail was covered in pretty sharp rocks and the Ranger had a decent load in the bed. Still, it convinced me that the stock Hankooks won't be up to my tasks, so I'll be moving on. For reference, they had about 10k miles on them at the time.

Interesting question.
We took our bone stock 19 XLT 4x4 into some unknown country in the Northern Sierra Range, while taking a trail we saw on the map, we stopped next to a Jeep Rubicon who was exiting the trail and airing back up. We asked how the trail ahead was and they looked at the stock Ranger, with stock tires, no lift and two old folks and laughed and said, "Good Luck!". We went ahead and had zero issues. Although the trail was extremely rough, rocky and intimidating, we made it to our desired camp for the night with no problems at all (although very slow getting there). We saw a few UTVs come by the next day, and all seemed surprised to see us there. Good Times!

Don't know if you have seen these:

Granted, they went on the easy trails, but the stock kooks handled...ok...but I would agree that their snow performance sucks. That said, I used mine for two years in New Hampshire with no issues; since switched to Cooper Discoverer AT3's

good luck

Been driving my ranger in and out of shale job sites for a year now with the hankooks. And no problem get to my excavator and get out. No damage. Although hankook not being my go to. But not bad for a stock tire
