Is the OBD2 port specific to the Ranger, or can I replace it with any OBD2 port off the internet?

So....

I got home this morning, after my 24 hour shift, tired as hell. I backed into my parking space as I always do and engaged the parking brake before putting it in park, as I always do. Only, this time I actually engaged the OBD2 port. See, every vehicle I drive for work has a foot engaged e-brake, not a handbrake. So, I snapped the front cover off the port with my size 12 boots. If I didn't have the stupid Progressive Snapshot thingy, I would have just moved my foot up and down a bit, slapped my forehead and called myself an idiot, and engaged the handbrake. But, the snapshot thingy was sticking out just enough for my boot to catch it. My first thought was, "Wow... that went pretty easily. Wait, it's not supposed to make a snapping sound. Fuck."

Anyway, I was looking for a replacement OBD2 port and they don't seem to be specific (the port itself). But, I was already stupid once today, figure I'll check before buying one. I don't think it matters, as long as you put the correct wires in the correct slots, which isn't a problem if it's a harness plug.

Thanks for any help!

Just get the ford part. The harness actually plugs into the back of the port.

And you might also want to get some smaller shoes so it doesn’t happen again.

Just get the ford part. The harness actually plugs into the back of the port.
Finally got around to ordering this today. Neither Benny at Levittown or my local dealership can tell me if this part will need to be programmed. Have you replaced this part and, if so, was it just plug-n-play or did it require programming? I know the truck will not start when I unplug the harness to get the part number off the back. I was just going to leave it out, until the replacement came in. If nobody knows, I'll just plug in the new one and if all goes well, it's good. If not, guess I'll make an appointment for programming.

If anyone needs a replacement, it's here: https://parts.levittownfordparts.com/oem-parts/ford-module-smart-data-link-jb3z14f642e

I hate it when Ford Parts doesn't show a picture! Googled it and that is in fact the OBDII port.
The harness plugs in here on the back side. I know this bc you need to unlug it when installing the alarm plus (or whatever they call it!). Just unplug your broken one and plug this one in. I would be VERY surprised if it needs to be prgrammed. What you are probably seeing when its unplugged is that some of those contacts are in and out, so without the port in place the circuit is open.

Hope that helps!

That’s what I’m hoping. And I knew that was going to be the right part. The model number of mine is discontinued and this is the replacement.

I’m thinking that my local dealership (who was selling the part for $150’ish) is just trying to get more money by charging me to remove and replace something that takes <5 minutes for 1 nut and one bolt, by saying, “That’s probably got to be programmed to your truck. You’ll need an appointment for us to put it in and program it if necessary.”

Def try to swap yourself 1st. If it doesn't work put the old one back in and take it to back the dealer.
Cant belive they said Probably got to be programmed. It either does or it doesn't. And they should tell you that up front. I just dont get dealers some time...

Yeah… the local dealer had trouble finding the part in their system, even with the old one in hand. He said he thinks it will need programming, because it’s “smart.” I don’t think it will, but who knows.

I can’t find any information about it online. I didn’t try very hard though. Like you said, try. If it doesn’t work, take it in.

I ordered from @LevittownFordParts.com on February 7 and it arrived today. Perfect plug-n-play, no programming needed.
