I only do it to dry out the evaporator. We had a Honda that had a horrible funk in the evaporator. It took numerous treatments to get it fixed. Unfortunately, the evaporator dries out much better when the outside temp is over 100. It's scheduled to be 108 Thursday. It isn't AZ heat but I won't be needing my hoody.

So I’ve always been told (not lately though) to Always turn off the AC before turning off the vehicle. Is this another of my personal outdated “car-isms” or could it actually be Beneficial to the AC compressor and clutch? My trucks ASS still activates even w the AC on, once it cools the cabin down, so as long as I let ASS be then it’s going against what I’ve always been told on its on.

I will need to verify this, but I believe the AC compressor used on the Ranger like many others is a clutchless unit. Instead of a clutch to sycle the compressor on/off there is a solenoid valve that opens and allows freon to flow through the system. When the AC is shut off the compressor is in bypass mode for lack of a better term but will continue to be driven by the belt system. There is no detriment at all in turning the system off when shutting the car off. The only real benefit would be to switch the system off recirculate to allow the accumulator coils to dry and prevent mildew development in high humidity environments.

105 is nothing lol I'd love for it to be that cool here. Heck it's 7:15 pm and it's still 109 out here with 117 forecasted this week.

Due to high humidity I normally turn off the AC and run the fan on high to dry things out. Since doing this i don't get that musty smell from the vents.

Not always this cool, usually in the 70's or low 80's on the coast. Winter's are a different story!

I know all about ME winters. I lived in MA for 50 years and we used to snowmobile in Northern Maine at Eagle Lake and Fort Kent. Every morning was -20 with single digit highs and while I didn't mind it back then I sure do now. lol

Run the fan on high for about five minutes when i am going to be parked for awhile; over night/work. Figured this out one time when i had water vapor condense on the vent fins. Running the fan dried them out and no musty smell when starting it up the next time.

I had an '84 Tempo I bought used back in 1990. It was a Gramma car-47,000 miles and Gramma dents & scrapes all around, and that wet rodent smell in the HVAC system. Lysol spray shot into the intake by the wipers killed off the mildew.
  • Have the windows open, turn the system on, fan on high and in fresh air, not Max or Recirc.
  • No A/C or heat works best. Spray for about 10 seconds, in each register setting i.e. Defrost, Vent, Floor/Vent, Floor.
  • Recommend doing this when you can leave the vehicle sit with the windows open for ~hour or so. The Lysol smell will be gone after 10-15 minutes running.
The car turned out to be a money pit. Replaced the steering rack, a left front rotor, the vacuum servo cruise control quit working, and it developed several minor leaks. I sold it in '92 to a wife's coworker who wanted it for his college-bound daughter. She blew it up two weeks later.

Tempo/Topaz....Yuk...POS of the first order.... They tried to give them away for cost inside Ford...few takers. Car engineering just continued to screw up and whine that these fucking truckers keep making the money on Trucks... We truckers got tired of supporting Car. We were half the size and owned the North American market for profitable vehicles.... Doubt this has changed much...Although I have to say my Lincoln Nautilus is a very nice vehicle.
