Not sure what all is quoted from the article (without going back an re-reading it all again) from the coloring of your text ...
so is your take to leave it on or off? In which circumstances??
I have the auto climate control system in the Ranger, but my 2009 Mariner has manual. On a really hot day, I start out with the windows down, AC on Fresh to expel the hot air in the vents and plenum. Once cool air starts flowing, I close the windows, switch to max AC (recirculate) and keep it there until the cabin is tolerably cool, then back to fresh air for the duration of the trip.
I can't find any definitive answers for potential CO intrusion into the cabin, but older Owners Manuals used to warn about that, as well as advising keeping a window down an inch when warming up the car in winter. New vehicles have one way venting built in to relieve pressure when an airbag blows, and serves the same purpose as a window ajar.

Bottom line, I prefer to run Max/Recirc as little as possible.
