Drive the speed limit. come a complete stop at all stop signs, and use your turn signal indicator - your tag is likely invalid and your truck is likely not registered in your name with the state DMV. If a LEO runs your plate, being “right” in principle might not get you anywhere. Work with your dealer to resolve it - be firm if you need to be - the DMV doesn’t care who’s right and who’s not..

Drive safe.

Yeah, I briefly entertained the idea of contacting the state but figured it wouldn't do any good.

Truck will stay in the garage until this is straightened out. Even of not, I'm old and white, I don't sweat the po-po much. A good disposition goes a long way.

Technically is the dealers truck still because of the title work, or lack of. Granted even at RMV they have a grace period for issues like this that do not penalize operators that have a bill of sale in hand and insured. But, that isn’t open ended ether so getting it resolved as you suggest sooner and not later is the smart move.

So your sales guy did all the financing paperwork? Did he try REALLY hard to sell you extra warranty stuff after just having to talk up how great the truck is to get the sale?

I always have to laugh a little inside when you spend a bunch of time with a sales person who has nothing but gushing praise for the vehicle you are interested in, then they sit you with a finance person who is hell-bent on convincing you the entire thing is going to fall apart the second it rolls past 3 yr/36k miles.

Anyhow - the dealer should eat it. You have a signed contract with a specified purchase price. The deal is done. If they won't eat it, you are due a 100% refund on any money collected, cancel the contract and you are off to shopping again. (which sucks)

I've been involved in this type situation as SVC Manager more than once. What happens ultimately is totally up to you and THEY know it. They will not risk getting sued over a mistake THEY MADE. Now to bottom lines.... If you want, pay it and feel good about it or roll the dice and sit on it and see what they would do. Me personally, I would explain that YOUR F&I made a mistake and I benefited from it without knowing when I agreed to the price YOU gave ME. But I'm willing to split it with you. You pay half and I pay half. I suspect that would satisfy both parties and neither one takes the full hit.

Sales manager took over for the part the finance department usually does. None of that as they already knew I wasn't about dealer addons. Overall it was very pleasant. Until now.

Apparently their finance director is supposed to be calling soon. Sounds like they wanna argue. Fully prepared to start shopping again but I really don't want to.

I like the way you think. However, really don't want to eat it for something that wasn't my fault.

Maybe halfsies and they throw in a spray in bedliner. That might be doable.

I'll try to stay flexible, but my gut tells me not to roll over.

Nothing wrong with them asking... never hurts to ask. But how they handle this moving forward will show the real character of the dealership.

That stinks. I guess you have to decide how much more $$ it's worth to you to not have to go through the time and hassle of shopping more. That's how much you should be willing to contribute to fix their mistake.

I'd insist they eat it. You can't go back after a contract is finalized and change the terms.

I like the way you worded that when it comes to compromise. Might just be the cost of doing business, or not having to at this point.

I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but were the taxes part of your sales price and contract? If it was part of the deal, and you "paid" the dealer the taxes through your loan or otherwise (eg. cash), and in turn the dealer didn't pay the taxes to the state/county, then in my mind it equates to fraud (or gross negligence) on their end.

In my state, Virginia, you pay sales tax when you buy a car. The dealer collects it and is responsible for sending the taxes to the state/county.

When I bought my truck Ford gave me A $750 early buyer's incentive. Remember (ROVP?)
I had it in writing and in the contract signed with the balance due.
When I took delivery the dealer claimed that Ford refused to honor the approved ROVP certificate and claimed that I owed an extra $750.
Another buyer ahead of me actually paid it!
I simply said...
"I'm sorry for your loss, but that's between you and Ford...as far as I am concerned you ARE Ford and you must honor the certificate... Thank You!"

End of story

If you want to negotiate halfsies, you deserve a lot more than a $400 (?) spray-in liner. I’d push for more. Sorry, but I’m not familiar with pricing on Ford Performance parts in the US or the dealer options available. Otherwise, I’d suggest something like a lift or winter wheel set - something More expensive.

Anyway, it’s a crappy situation, for you and the dealer - the sales guy and the sales manager screwed up but the owner of the dealership might be a hard ass. If you have to make a deal, make it the best deal you can - take their profit out of anything you ask for. It’s only fair - their mistake, not yours.

In the end, they might just say...you bought the the truck from us for a negotiated pre-tax amount of $XX,XXX. Thanks. Here’s a cheque for the incorrect amount of tax you gave to us. The truck’s not registered. You need to go do that. We normally to do that as a value-added favour but we’re not required to - you‘re now on your own. Thank you and good luck.

That would suck! You are still in the driver’s seat, so negotiate HARD!

Hi Floyd,

Purchased my 2020 Lincoln Nautilus. Months later I got a check for $300...no explanation. Called the Salesman...no idea...no interest in tracking it down. So cashed the check....WTF?

That's funny Phil.

I got a check for $7 from the dealer about 45 days after purchase, DMV fee over- paid.
