Putting a roadside emergency kit together in which I want to include a gallon of coolant. The printed and online 2020 Ranger owners manual says to use Motorcraft Orange coolant, yet the attached chart put out by Motorcraft says to use Motorcraft Yellow coolant.
It also notes a running change for MY 2019 from Orange to Yellow on 7/8/19, heads up on this 2019 owners.
The Motorcraft site cryptically warns not to mix the 2 different color coolants, the actual coolant in the reservoir on my truck kinda looks yellow, in a psychedelic sort of way.
Who would you believe in this situation?
Personally I believe the chart and my eyes more than the asinine manuals...

So just in case you have not gotten an answer always go by the color of what your original coolant is. When the ranger first came out they were using an orange coolant. After a period of time they switch to the yellow coolant. My truck was built in September and has the yellow coolant. Ford also released a bulletin recently saying that the yellow coolant is updated and that orange coolant can be switched to the yellow if flushed. I personally prefer the yellow coolant is it is because I swear when coolant is engineered and design because cooling system failures.

Sure glad I found this thread. My July 2020 build Ranger has the yellow coolant and of course the included manual specifies orange. I was thinking about calling the dealer service department and asking if my Ranger had the wrong coolant.

As far as I know there two basic coolants. Ethylene Glycol and OAT (organic additive technology). EG is typically some shade of green. OAT is the yellow/orange discussed here.

OAT is the choice for newer vehicles. My 2014 Dart uses it. ...don know when OAT was adopted. It's supposedly superior from a life and breakdown standpoint.

Ford's warning about mixing different color coolants is probably due to the fact that EG and OAT are incompatible. Mixing results in a gooey sludge crud that will seriously clog a cooling system.

I'm betting OAT + OAT of any color is OK.

I'm curious what mine has now, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the wrong stuff. My wife had transmission problems in her Hyundai, when the dealer went to change the fluid they found the factory put something other than transmission fluid in it. Got a lifetime transmission warranty out of it, not that we kept the suv that long.

Im bothered that its just called "Yellow". The Orange looks Orange. But the yellow looks greenish. Flourescent green? Chartreuse? Would be more accurate.

I agree, it resembles Chartreuse more than simply yellow, I'm guessing Ford did not want to confuse it's owners by dyeing it blue (Honda) or Pink/Red (Toyota). I'm just glad it doesn't resemble the color "rust"...lol
