I am curios to know if anyone has tried using the Motorcraft FL400 filter on this truck? This is the filter that I use on my Focus ST 2.0 and the 2.0 Escape which both call for the shorter FL910S. They are the same diameter with a longer can and higher capacity. I am about to do my first oil change and have not checked the clearance for such application.

So far with how much I drive and how often I do my oil changes on my truck I still go with a factory fl910s. I'm not worried about a bigger capacity for a couple of reasons. For one the manufacture decided that the fl910s is just fine for the Ranger. Also if you look inside a Motorcraft filter it has very high potential. It's nowhere near the low quality of a Fram filter. I got my Ranger October 30th of 2019 and I already have 15,000 miles on it. I've already done three oil changes because I'm here in the Rockies and I don't think you can go anywhere that doesn't have extreme conditions so I do my oil changes every 5000 miles. If it were me I would just use what the Factory calls for and most of the time when you go to the dealer that use the factory filter as it is. I feel that the fl910s is just the right size for it. Before this truck I had a 2016 Nissan Frontier and the filter for it was smaller and did just fine for a 4.0 V6 at 5000 miles. Nissan also uses a very high-quality filter unlike Fram. That's just my two cents but you may do whatever you feel.

I can appreciate your thoughts and are in reality you are correct. I have been involved in high performance vehicles my whole life and look for every advantage.

Something else I will add to this. One thing a lot of people don't understand is that with the manufacturer designs for a vehicle especially when it's actual top quality is more than enough. The oil filter is a great example. I'm pretty sure most of you are not taking your trucks out on the Baja 500 or down a quarter mile drag strip every other day. Most of you are just like me to where you're going to work and back home and hitting the occasional Trail if you got a 4 by 4. This isn't like a General Motors where their filters are absolute garbage like Fram. Ford makes very top quality filters in the Motorcraft selection. When I used to work at O'Reilly Auto Parts years ago I had plenty of Ford guys who wanted the Ford filter is because they knew the quality was there. A bigger filter really isn't going to give you any benefit especially when you just daily driving. Also our trucks are able to go up to 10,000 miles on an oil change as long as certain conditions are met. I myself still go to 5000 because it's much easier to keep track of a maintenance especially with the severe conditions I'm always driving it here in the Rockies with wonderful cold weather and snow. Remember bigger is not always better. I hope this helps a lot of people on just keeping the regular Factory fl910s filter.

I'm just using the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-30 I have considered the idea of full synthetic oil but haven't gotten there yet. I already understand that full synthetic has a much higher heat protection then synthetic blend and conventional motor oil. Ford also states that unless you're in an extremely cold environment width -20 or below temperatures that you don't need the full synthetic. Also as long as I keep up with the maintenance like I'm supposed to it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I should add that was where I live I get close to that temperature but have yet to see it.

My 87 2.9L would clack like a tin bucket full of rocks when it first cranked up with the FL1A OEM filter on it. I moved up to the bigger FL299 (Purolator L40017 I run now) that has more capacity and the same micro rating, and that extra capacity at start up keeps it nice and quiet. Those loud ass valves...

Hi Ashley,

I remember those days....the 2.9L was a modified 2.8L with hydraulic valve lifters in place of the old 2.8 solid tappet valve lifters. As I recall....foggy memory...the 2.9L arrived on the scene in 1986 but the first generation of hydraulic valve liters needed some refinement. You likely had a early 2.9L in your vehicle... Not so much of a problem for the Ranger with the 2.8L as the valve adjustment was not all that bad to accomplish, but on the Aerostar it was a nightmare!

There really isn't going to be a difference with going to a bigger filter on the new Ranger. The technology now a days has far improved compared to way back in the day before I was thought of. also that's if there is any room for a bigger filter. I have enough trouble getting my oil filter wrench on as it is. Also as long as you keep up on the maintenance unlike most you should not have any issue at all. Hopefully its nowhere near like the 4.6 and 5.4 where if you keep going over the intervals for oil changes it destroyed the oil passages in the entire engine.

I don't think the specs referenced are accurate. I saw this same discussion a while back on another forum. The source had since changed it's info not to include the bypass psi. Other sources listed identical bypass psi for Motorcraft and other brands of both sizes, usually between 12-15psi. Also the Micron rating of the above was off. I think either filter would be fine, the FL-400s fits just fine, I am using one as are others on this forum. I do 5k changes. I think Ford contradicts itself with extended oci's and non synthetic filter media. IDK??
