the holy grail taillight is broken, that's the go-no-go point for insurance.
Can literally buy a new furniture set for your living room for the price of one taillight
Ya. That had me worried for sure. A lot of tech in that one taillight

That sucks. Glad everybody is okay though.

My thought is that between parts availability and cost it'll be totalled. I know that's not what you want to hear though.

Glad to hear everyone in the truck is ok, that’s the main thing. Did the airbag(s) go off? That’s one of the bigger indicators for a total. By what I can see looks like the trailer hitch took most of the hit. That transfers to the frame. I see what Phil is saying and it does look like bed shift slightly. It’s probably borderline on getting it fixed or not. It’s amazing how fast the total amount goes up once it gets itemized with shop rates thrown in. A really good shop could get that back but, you’ll always have a ding on carfax for this truck going forward. Just keep that in mind if it goes that route

So my wife got rear ended Friday. Looks like the frame is fine just the bumpers (front and rear). Do you think it’s repairable?

My wife wrecked my Ranger as well. Mostly front Driver side damage, it took almost a month to get it back. I still have a few things that need to be fixed, but it is back and almost as it was when she wrecked it. I feel for you, when she told me she wrecked it (after I told her not to wreck it) my heart sank. I love my truck and missed it while it was being repaired. I will say this though, the rental that we had was a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. I will say, save your money and get a Ranger because for the features the Jeep had, it is not worth the extra $20,000 that the Jeep costs new.

One thing you can do while you wait for your insurance company is to find trucks as similar as possible to yours to establish a payout if it is totaled. You want to establish the retail cost of an exact replacement. This will give you a ballpark target amount for settlement. Maybe it won’t be totaled. If it is, though, it helps to argue with examples in your hands. With the current low inventory of nearly every make and model, it may be easier to get cash than a replacement.

Glad your family is alright. That’s the most important thing. I’m not sure if you are located in CA, but I work for a law firm. I’ve been handling personal injury car accidents for over 5 years.

First, you should be represented by an attorney. From how you described the accident, your wife is not at fault. However, since there are multiple cars, it could become complicated.

Second, you should have your family seen by your PCP. They could be alright but after the adrenaline passes, pain to the back and spine could start. Potentially needing a chiropractor.

Further, as others have stated, a body shop will have to remove the body panels and others to see if there is more damage to the frame.

Let me know if you have any questions.

That's good news Matt. It's hard to say if it's totaled until the body shop person can get under the truck to look at the frame. The thing that looks bad is the hit was hard enough to push the bed into the cab.

BTW, I don't know where your co-worker came up with that information about reselling wrecked trucks. Insurance companies don't deal in resales, and if it's totaled they just send off to the junk yard. But, it's a good story nevertheless. :)

Good luck. I hope all is settled to your satisfaction.
I have a coworker that buys insurance totaled vehicles, has them repaired, and resells them, although most end up with a salvage title. Some she's able to have recertified and sold with a regular title.
I forget the name of the auction website, but I'm sure you could look it up.
So yeah, the insurance Co doesn't really deal with reselling the wrecks directly, but they do have auction companies that do it for them.

I think the website you are talking about is copart.com. Regarding the insurance company totaling it, I think that will come down to the value of a wrecked Ranger in today’s market. With yours, it looks like the whole driveline, interior, airbags and some body panels are totally intact. So, your Ranger will be at the high end of that wrecked Ranger value. So, whatever the wrecked (salvage) value is, plus the cost of repairs will be compared with the book value on your Ranger. This was method Geico used to determine that my Mustang GT was a total loss. At the time, my Mustang was worth @ $30k, and the repair estimate was @ $22k. I was told that the salvage value of my car was @ $13k, so it was cheaper for Geico to total it, and then sell the car as salvage. So in the end, they got away with paying me $30k - $13k = $17k.

Very unlikely it is totaled. Typically repairs need to exceed 70 to 80 percent of current retail value to total. Given price of used trucks is still sky high, not thinking you are there. It will take a while to fix and you should be compensated for a rental car. Good luck ?

+1 to the other comments about additional damage. I had a mustang painted tThe same color. When it was hit and had a small ding, that paint was hard to match. They did a great job but ended up painting nearly the entire passenger side from the rear quarter panel, up to the ridge of the roof and down the a-pillar to do best paint match and have the color change at a body panel line. Repainting the back of your cab and truck bed after fix is likely a large job.

I’m a little worried they might total it. A coworker said that due to demand for trucks they are totally them, then repairing them and reselling
As soon as they total it, if they do, offer to buy it back from the insurance company for what they will sell it for. But to be honest, the damages have to be over 2/3 of the value of the vehicle, I believe. Somewhere in that vicinity. Maybe even 70 to 80%.

Drivables/Repairables wind up at auction, where they may require a salvage or other designation on the title. Can vary state to state.

Glad your wife is ok. Airbags aren't designed to go off from a rear impact. There's a good possibility your frame is tweaked which would be expensive to repair. Make sure you pick a good shot that would repair it correctly. I believe the frame is high strength steel on our rangers and requires certain procedures to repair properly, in other words, they can't heat it up to pull it and bend it straight as it will compromise the metal.
