Why don't we have actual small trucks any more? Best deep dive I've seen.

This is the best answer to the question of why nobody builds little trucks like the 4g any more. (Spoiler: It's the EPA and CAFE standards)
This guy lays it out in a short, but complete explanation, while avoiding a lot of complicated math.
Well, he does show one equation, and some graphs, but it's a really good presentation.

I remember the 2013 Tacoma extended cab SR5 I had. It had the 2.7 and 4 speed auto with 4wd. On the oem Dunlop car-like tires, it got 30 mpg all day every day on the highway and got 27 mpg in mixed driving. I would love to have something like that again based on a truck frame that got that kind of mpg.

I appreciate the nostalgia for a small truck and I’ve owned a couple, but from a functionality and usability standpoint, I don’t want anything smaller than my current Ranger.

The demand is a huge part of it too. Ford pulls some damn magic, and the f150 gets near same gas mileage as the ranger. If they put the same effort into R&D into a smaller truck they could still meet emission standards. But for every ranger they sell 7 f150s, so the development isn’t worth it.

The magic though is making the engine direct injection, turbo'd and more complex with crap like EGR valves and 10 speed trannys that blow up. You don't get your mpg money back if the vehicle doesn't last.

The old trucks were so simple anyone could fix them and for next to nothing. My old Ranger had a 4cyl in a 6cyl engine bay too, so roomy to work on.

I didn't watch the video, but my take on trucks from today is that I live in Canada and our forests are burning, and towns are ablaze, and you just cant evacuate with all your possessions in a trailer towed behind a Maverick. Heck my Ranger isn't even up to the task.
But on the flip side, all those people jumping on the bandwagon for oil and gas to be shut down to save the world from global warming are all lining up for someone with a truck to help them get out since their Tesla's aren't doing it for them.
What a world we live in.

What’s left of a 68’ Datsun sits in our pasture, makes me still smile, 1st vehicle that I purchased in 80’, “mine”, seen a lot of “Air” time on country roads. Dang can’t abuse, then do repairs on any modern pickup. Simple, basic. Finally gave up the ghost late 80’s, while deployed overseas.

It is a great review. I miss the smaller pickups, used to have an '02 Ranger, '03 and '04 Tacoma, and an '80 D-50 pickup from Dodge.
