Why didn't Ford do something like this?

The supercabs have them. One is filled with the scissor jack and wrench for tire changes, the other is empty. Issue is you have to remove seat bottom to get to them. I leave mine off along with headrests. They're decently deep, I keep a few bungie cords, ratchet straps, shackle, and 30ft tow strap in the one. Even have lids too.
I keep road flares and safety triangles in my Scab cubbies. These are things I would rarely, if ever use, because as you said, removing the seats is cumbersome (well, not too bad but Cheech has his mega mattress on top of it).

And, because this is a pickup truck, we shouldn't overlook that the bed is made to carry stuff, so, to me, under seat cubbies are a bonus and not a main feature.

I carry this in my scab (plus snow chains, not in pic, and that blue jug on the left is a 25' chain):

As we all know the storage under the rear seats are a bit lacking. Don't believe me? Then ask yourself why Ford didn't do anything like this? Mind you this is in the Nissan Frontier!!

I agree, what is under the seat that Ford has to make so little room available

I was using the trays to hold a bunch of roadside emergency gear, like others have said, but once the youngest went from the baby car seat to the child car seat, all of that stuff came out and went into a bin that's secured to the back of the bed. Sure, I lose a bit of bed space, but I don't want to have to move that car-sized Lazy-Boy every time I need to get something out from under there, so until the kid graduates to a booster seat, that space is lost to me anyway.

Lariat what? If you're talking about the Ranger the trays are much smaller
Yes, on a ranger group. I thought you were referring to a stray system instead of just open space. It is small.

I was used to carrying so much stuff in my old FJ40, even 2 spares and an auxiliary gas tank (40 gallons) total. I even carried things like a timing light!

I don't know why I bother carrying a small tool kit for the Ranger - anything that poops out is likely computer controlled.

As many have said on this forum, the best tool kit is a cell phone and credit card! =D

So did I read correctly and you may be looking at a new truck? Curious as to what you like out there. I had wanted a Maverick but I'm glad I went too late to order it.

I looked at Toyota first, since I have had several and that '72 FJ still runs (but unsafe to drive due to brakes) but it was too expensive and I didn't like that it had drums in the back. I also looked at Nissan, Honda, Chevy, and Dodge mid-size but couldn't get a better deal for payload and towing capability. Plus I was really trying to stay cheap frugal.

LOL, if I had found this forum first, it would have been a Ranger without a doubt (double-edged sword - this forum is awesome but it's also expensive!). =D

Now that we're in a bit better financial situation, I probably would have gone with an XLT (although, I really do like steel rims).

So what are you looking at? If you are. =)

Depending on the vehicle it will definitely depend on what you do to what you do and don't need. When I had my 2016 Frontier I liked the idea of keeping things like straps and towing equipment along with a set of jumper cables. As you mentioned I didn't need parts and tools since it would have to go to a.shop to get fixed anyway. I just figured the basics for cargo stuff is all I need and I would rather not take up bed space if it wasn't necessary.

In my 1993 Pathfinder it's taking me a bit to figure out what I do and don't need to carry as it has few failures that will happen(the nice thing about a reliable vehicle). If anything just more of the Off-road and Camping Equipment as needed really.

I do appreciate Japanese vehicles.. quite a bit actually. Most Nissans just don't inspire any sort of confidence for me.. hard to explain.
I personally haven’t had luck with Nissan SUV in the past. That’s why I drive a 2020 Ranger now. But if Isuzu had there d-max for sale in the US. I’d be all over it!

Right now, the only truck that I like is the new tundra. But I’m probably a year out from ordering at least assuming interest rates don’t get worse. The new 4 runner may be a contender, but it depends on its towing. What would be awesome is if Toyota sold the land cruiser truck they do in Australia. I would definitely be interested in one of those.

I'm going to assume you had one of the Pathfinders with a CVT and was more like a mini van type? If so I understand.......

Me too. Have you noticed more noise from the vents behind the seat backs? Any solution for that?
Personally I haven’t. I have had the bottoms off for a while though so it’s possible I’ve gotten used to it. Just so I understand, are you saying you leave the seat backs on as well, as that’s what I do.

They aren't worth it. One of.mu buddies has one and from what he told me, good luck doing any kind of work with it. At best he sees 16MPG on a good day and it's stock. With the hybrid system it runs it's not efficient at all
I JUST DID A 1000 KM HIGHWAY TRIP IN MY 2019 RANGER. I AVERAGED 130 KM/H BUT STILL ONLY USED 9.6 LITRES PER 100 KMS WHICH WORKS OUT TO 29 MPG USING 91 OCTANE. I'M PRETTY HAPPY WITH THAT. SO FAR IT'S BEEN A SOLID UNIT.. BARELY BROKEN IN WITH 48,000 KMS ON THE ODOMETER
