I was going to replace my 2017 Colorado with another one until I discovered I could get $9,500 in rebates on a 2019 Ranger the end of last year. G.B.

Like others, I grew up with and learned to work on Fords. But have not only owned Fords

I have employee pricing available to me for both Ford and GM.
I renovated and used as a DD, a 1990 Wrangler earlier this century.

Did my research.
Test drove a Ranger SuperCab because I thought i wanted inside the cab secure storage, and thought a 6 foot bed was my needed standard.
I felt squished in the cab.
Chevy dealer was a joke, when I said I was comparing trucks, he basically said comeback when you are ready to buy! What?!
GMC dealer was great. Handed me keys to a truck and said come find him when I was done. Not wowed, but not disappointed.
I test drove the Gladiator and became enamored - willing to comprise the 6 foot bed for the convertible. (and a heated steering wheel)
I received a quote good till the en of 2019 in late November for a Gladiator, 5% below invoice. Loved the convertible option. The quote just sat there, I couldn't pull the trigger.
Decided I should at least test drive the Ranger SuperCrew. The cab was the open feeling I was looking for. I don't have to have a 6 foot bed.

So, all in all, The Ranger XLT was what I was looking for the whole time. Equipment, options, and price. My 9th Ford, (plus one Merc) and first brand new Ford purchased on December 21

Why did I choose a Ranger?

Well, for a few reasons. I've always been a Ford loyalist, but that aside, I did try to consider other options especially when I started getting impatient waiting around for the Ranger.

Tacoma:
Great truck. I'm sure it'll last forever, be a champ off-road, and the resale will be great. It's just so. boring. Toyota makes the most boring cars I've ever driven. The interior is dull, the seating position is so low, there's no feedback in anything you do, and the acceleration is god-awful without the V6. Also, they're priced pretty high and most dealers aren't willing to negotiate much on these.

Frontier:
You literally can't tell if it's a 2009 or a 2019. The design is extremely dated. Price is great, but not much else is.

Gladiator:
I'm on the fence about the looks, and have never been a Mopar/FCA fan.

Canyon/Colorado:
My father in law had a Canyon and I honestly hated it. The transmission was horrible, would get stuck at very low revs and take forever to kick down. The engine had great power as long as you were willing to absolutely ring it out.

Ranger:
Got everything I wanted for a pretty decent price. Also it's better in almost every spec than the competition. Safety, towing, acceleration, fuel economy, payload, entry/departure angles, etc. The Tacoma gets close on a few, but it's just an all around good truck. Plus I love the ecoboost.

My ever first pickup was a '17 Canyon Denali. When I traded it in November 2019, it was on its 3rd torque converter and 2nd AC compressor. Of the 25 months I owned the truck, it was in the dealership for 3 of them. So my GMC experience alone really killed any chance of my buying a GM product in the near (or long term) future. Additionally, I was and still am disappointed in GM's lack of some features on their supposedly high end Denali model. Namely, keyed ignition, no LED lamps, crappy Apple Carplay integration, etc. Ultimately, I knew I needed a midsize and like many others explored the other viable options out there. As much as I wanted a Tacoma, it was horribly uncomfortable during test drives, and I felt it was lacking in the technology that Ford and others had. When I first looked at the Ranger in summer of '18, the pricing / financing offers weren't all that attractive. Finally when I again began to look in earnest this past November, the 0% financing along with pretty aggressive discounts lured me in.

After having owned the Ranger now for 2 months and 1500+ miles, I have few (if any) regrets. I'm still getting used to the sound of the 4 cylinder engine, but otherwise thrilled with my purchase. Now, just biding my time and money until I can get a leveling kit and a little bigger rubber.

Same goes for Ford's removable carrier differential design often referred to as the Ford 9 inch with honest to God axle bearings and not Ford's present Mickey Mouse design on which the axle rides directly on the bearing's needles.
I remember marveling how Ford installed the same 9 inch design on lowly Pinto's and Bobcats, which I think were equipped with V6's.
Of course, it was a scaled-down version of the 9 inch but the same basic design, talk about overkill.

All excellent observations, is there a particular reason why you left the Ridgeline out?

You are spot on about Toyota's, my Mom drives a '06 Camry 4cyl., it is the quintessential old ladies vehicle, super reliable but as boring as a doorknob. I call it the "Mrs. Shimizu" car, Shimizu being a common last name in Hawaii. It reminds me of a Plymouth Duster I once owned, slant six and all...

The Gladiator is probably the best offroader here, but who in their right mind is going to trash a $52K+ vehicle driving through briars and brambles? I'm with you on its styling, it gives new meaning to the word "ugly".

The Frontier is stuck in a time warp, Nissan better hurry their planned re-design to the market...pronto.

As for the GM twins, well they are GM products, need I say more?

Pretty much the same for me..
2017 Colorado and I loved it. One of the best vehicles I have owned.
It was a extended cab and long bed. When we bought it we need a larger bed and less interior space. Well with grand kids growing up we need more space in the back seat. I have been watching and researching for a while on all three. I had decided against the Taco mainly because of back seat space was less than the Colorado and Ranger. I was going back and forth between the Ranger and the Colorado. The rebates got me...

I came to Ranger in a roundabout way, I recently retired and finally have the time to work in my shop building things that I always wanted to but never had the time during my working years. However, the Lexus LX460 while a very nice comfortable SUV just did not fit the wood nor other supplies that I needed to complete some of the projects that I wanted to build.

After much consulting with the wife as long as she was comfortable in the vehicle I selected, I had her blessing and off we went pick-up truck shopping (it probably helped that she recently got her new daily and loved it, so the few times she had to ride in the pick-up would be okay with her.)

We first stopped by Toyota because well I liked the Lexus, so I presumed that I would like the Tacoma. First problem the amount of Tacoma Limiteds was slim to begin with (and I nor my wife liked exterior color of either of the two on the lot (and when I asked about any that might be at the port, in-transit, etc. I was actually told what you see if what you get I (the salesman) am not allowed to sell what is not on the lot) and after getting inside of one, I was having issues with price of it. Pick-up in the V6 was okay, the turning radius was not great and well the overall vehicle just seemed boring and cheap feeling, plus that Toyota Infortainment system is actually worse than my Lexus (which is not great). No doubt it would stand the test of time, but I am not going to be keeping it forever and well that is what an extended warranty is for anyway with regards to less mechanically reliable vehicles.

We looked at the Chevy Colorado and probably would have purchased but the sales experience was so poor that I ended up walking out of the dealer and have steered two friends over to Ford because the Chevy experience was that bad.

On a lark we hit up Ford, honestly I knew the least about the Ranger and decided to go in and explore it a little as I had time and the dealer chain is know for no haggle, no pressure, stress-free (or as close to stress free sales as possible). The salesman could not have been nicer and more helpful if he wanted to be, I explained that I knew next to nothing about Ranger and honestly, just wanted to kick the tires so to speak a little before working on a sale. He said no worries, you know it is lunch time, why not give me your license and I can set you up on an extended test drive, go to lunch drive it around and lets talk after 3pm, that way you can get to know the Ranger, see if you like it and if it fits your life.

The wife liked that idea and so did I so after signing a few forms, off the wife and I went first to lunch and then to the house, Lowes, etc. I found the interior to be comfortable and the tester was an XLT I had to imagine a Lariat would be even better. I liked Sync3, the acceleration was amazing for a pick-up, let alone a 4 cylinder, the turn radius was better than Tacoma and overall it was comfortable. The lack of a tailgate damper was an interesting omission, but beyond that and a bunch of hard touch plastics, it would serve my minimal needs without issue, so with the wife’s buy I went back a bought a 2019 Ranger Lariat with 501a.

Looks as though the guy in the middle got some big shoes to fill,

To each his own, if you were even able to GIVE me a FCA product, I'd promptly dump it on C/list or FB marketplace.
Not Really!!! They are my children and gotta take good care of them.:wink::wink:

I am brand loyal, and have no need to be otherwise, but after driving a 1997 single cab F-150 for ten years with only 103,000 miles on it and being very dependable, I got the new truck itch. I checked prices on the new F-150's, and they were way out of my budget. So, I started looking at RAM 1500's (Forgive me Ford, for I had sinned!), and was determined to get one! Now just let me say that I have been driving Ford trucks for over 30 years, and have no complaints whatsoever with them. But, my wife kept nagging me to look at smaller trucks so she would be comfortable driving it if needed. I told her that there is not a smaller truck on the market that I would be happy with, including Toyota. Then one day as her and I were out in her car, a new Ford Ranger pulled up next to me. She said, "Look at that truck, it's cute, I like it! End of story, and I'm loving my new Ranger Supercrew XLT!!!

Yeah, but the only thing she ain't happy about now is the second car payment that we didn't have before. But, she'll get over it in time....all is good on the homefront!

Generic advice passed to each generation of males in my family: Happy wife, happy life. I’m currently trying to impart this in theory to my 15 year old son.
