I'm just throwing this out there, take it as you will.
This is all I've collected in a years time, and 9k miles or so.

AmC1zO2.webp

Most of which was collected during fall and winter. All of June-August I didn't get anything in my catch can. I think they help, but I can't say they'll prevent or cause issues*.

*When properly installed, of course.

I went with Mishimoto when I first bought the truck in 2020. I constantly pull this much out of the can every 3-6K miles. It is 3 1/2 years old now and all hoses are still in original condition 61k miles. Ford probably doesn’t include this as an option because it takes effort to empty and most ppl now a days don’t like extra work. It’s worth the extra work to have the truck last longer in my opinion. But who knows maybe this is snake oil in the can ?

Better question is how long do you plan on keeping the vehicle?
I sell/trade pretty much as soon as I pay one off. Some of these guys plan to be buried in their rangers.
Better money may be spent on an extended warranty.
I'm 55, been driving since I was 15. Never had any ride fail from not having one of these cans. And I'll be the first to say, I have not researched them.
My list of bolt on wants are: charge pipes, exhaust, intake, tuner, and maybe intercooler. I do zero off roading so no suspension needs. All the above can be considered "snake oil" but hey, I want it.
You want the catch can, put some time in your research and look to other areas besides an enthusiast forum

I want to know, even if people catch crap in the catch can, how detrimental would it be if it didn't get caught? Seems like it is pretty minimal vs. a few thousand miles.

16,800 miles total on truck, 15,000 with UPR catch can (dual port) installed. This is a 2.63 litre (.7 gallon) jug. The stuff in the bottom (thick black sludge) is what concerns me most. Over 12,000 miles were on trips of 300 miles at a time or longer. Typically 500 miles daily for that 12,000. A couple of 800 miles in a day.

Probably an issue if you only make 1 mile trips all the time.

While it's not really important, that is max a gallon jug. Looks to be an orange juice jug, which usually comes in a gallon or less. Nonetheless, doesn't look pretty. But that is less than half full so, if it is a gallon jug, it's less than 64oz. in 16,800 miles. Just an observation.

It is the biggest of the orange juice jugs. I checked and it is 2.63 Litre (0.7 gallon) Jug.

Just to emphasize, 71.5% of those miles were long distance miles - at a constant 55-75 mph. This is the best scenario for low buildup of carbon on the intake valve stems. Buildup could be much worse for urban or small town drivers who travel a majority of short distances.

Corrected original post to reflect the actual jug size.

I got the UPR as soon as I got my truck and they offered it. Added the second vacuum line as soon as that was made available. Lived in south Florida at the time and while I didn't save up the crud that it collected I constantly got stuff out and was draining the CC every 3-4 fuel ups.

Now in central Georgia and through a couple cold winters, I still consistently drain liquid but haven't collected or analyzed it's makeup. From what I read the majority is water and that's generally not a problem. Looking at what others have collected it's obviously got other stuff I'd presume ultimately contributes to whatever collects on the valve stems.

I wonder if ethanol content influences moisture in the crankcase via blow-by. Humidity may have too?

People constantly say "these are necessary!! I catch so much water during winter" seemingly not realizing that the design of the catch can creates the condensation (water) that it is catching. So yeah it catches a lot of water in the winter. It also is the cause of that water in the winter.

Our engines already have a "catch can" or oil separator that drains back to the sump. Sure it doesn't catch everything, but as others have said, I have yet to see anyone with a long running engine mention any problems due to a lack of an aftermarket can.

Instead of a "can", has anybody tried to use a bit of Snake Oil Additive instead !

I won't knock anyone wanting one. As I want to add a intake and cat back exhaust. Jury is out on those as well.
I just know I ran my last F150 to around 175,000 and had small issues. None relating to never adding a catch system.

I like to spend money on snake oil stuff because the marketing is so convincive. Just like the people who said open borders was good for America.
(sorry, ban me)
