Here in AZ we had to do a good deal of research to find all the "shelters" (many are now in private homes) and "agencies" that have adoptable dogs. Most in the shelters here ARE Pit Bull mixes of one kind or another, and Chihuahua's. You have to be diligent to find something other than that around here. We have three Terrier mix mutts, all which run just at 20 lbs apiece. Best dogs of ever! :)
But I admit to being biased just a bit.
Ok so I spent a few hours at a couple of rescues today. I wanted to take home all of the dogs, except one that tried to bite me. There was one, a husky (I know, I know), that ran up to me and laid down at my feet. She was so loving and lovable. I asked about her temperament and energy level. They said she is kind of lazy and prefers to cuddle vs exercise. They said I would likely have to force her to go on walks everyday. They told me she is well trained and loves people. She is there because her previous owner died from COVID. ?

Unfortunately, for me but great for her, she has been adopted and just waiting for her new family’s application to be approved. They put me on stand by if it falls through. I should mention she is only 2.5 years old.

All in all it was a wonderful day.

I wish you luck with the husky, a lazy husky is a wonderful thing.

Ours helps pull the dog sled, so we don't want lazy, but if I were looking for another I'd start by calling the local mushing teams and asking if they have any dropouts. The dogs that are too lazy to pull make good pets IMO.

You shouldn't need to spent $XYZ on a dog. You do need to find a training book and read it. These are quite good and all 95% the same. Seems the most we ever spent for a mutt was $50 but its the veterinary bills is what gets into the $$$. Don't assume that it won't cost you. Here is more photos of trained, socialized dogs in action. You can do this will yours as well . In the lower photo, Wally was told to get on top of the bales, because we wouldn't like to do that.

I think Wally likes it up there where he can keep watch over his humans. Our Joline keeps a close eye on my wife and me. Her biggest dilemma is if we are in separate parts of the house. She usually lays in the hall way so she will know when one of us moves.

It took her almost a year to transition from a shy rescue to a full and confident member of the household pack. Sometimes I remind her that she is not in charge, but I am not sure she is convinced. Rescued dogs can be great companions if treated and trained properly.

Joline came to us from the Humane society, they sent her to a local prison program where inmates train dogs. They did a good job.

Well, my initial adoption application was approved and now the local Animal Compassion League is going to visiting my apartment Monday, for a pre-adoption inspection. Before I am allowed to adopt they have to visit a pet’s potential new home. Once everything is all clear I can find my new four-legged family member. ??

Not going to lie I am a little nervous yet super excited.

Edit: I should mention they will also recommend the best size dog for me. Also, my girl was still there today. ?

Neighbor kids saying "where's the dogs?" More are on the dogs blog. The parents wouldn't be happy with them peering in our windows but we like that.. Me and the mutts love the kids

We just got home from a road trip to northern MN and central SD. Here is some dogs pics of them out and about on this trip. Wally on top of the bales, is very nervous of those big beasts looking at him...

More mutt photos taken in Chamberlain SD. The 2nd from the bottom is the most nervous dog on the planet. He bolted seconds later. Yes, we train our mutts. The boarder collie is a work dog of my dads, Kate. What a nice pup.
