Thanks. Funny thing, I didn't realize it was the anniversary of it when I posted, well, at least not consciously.
I tell people the hardest part about having a pet is saying goodbye but the good times, companionship and memories make it worthwhile. Still doesn't ease the pain.

Oh yes, a socialized mutt can pull the kids and their mom's in. This was taken at a music event at our library but you must train them. They are somewhat similar to kids and need lots of care, love and training. Without it, they are no fun to be around, like annoying kids.
We train them so we can take them anywhere without a hassle. Most of the photos I post here, the dog was told to be in them. 90% of the people in these photos, we don't know but they do love a friendly mutt.
Huskys are high energy dogs, needs lots of exercise and attention. IMHO not a good breed for a first time dog owner, not that I know jack about you, just my words of warning.I should have added that I really want a Husky. Particularly an Alaskan Klee Kai.
Thanks. I think you are right. I have to consider another breed for now. I read about their energy level and other characteristics and think I may not be ready. I worry I will not be able to get out and exercise with them as much as they need, especially since I live in an apartment with no yard. I can give them lots of attention though. Lastly, this breed cost about $2900-4000 and I cannot afford that.
I have a rescue and would not have three dogs now if he was my first. My first dog as an adult was a golden retriever. Fantastic dogs, mellow and eager to please their owners. Other than being a tad destructive as a puppy, easy dogs to own. I have one now in addition to the rescue mutt and a husky.
You shouldn't need to spent $XYZ on a dog. You do need to find a training book and read it. These are quite good and all 95% the same. Seems the most we ever spent for a mutt was $50 but its the veterinary bills is what gets into the $$$. Don't assume that it won't cost you. Here is more photos of trained, socialized dogs in action. Rescue mutt is the way to go. Many of them out there that would be greatly appreciative of someone to just spend time with them. I have three now, and they are the best dogs ever!
I have been looking at the local animal shelters and rescues. There are some adorable pups. Most are Pitbulls or similar. I am trying to decide on size because I think a large dog would hate my 725 sq ft apartment. I do know I do not want a small dog. ??
Here in AZ we had to do a good deal of research to find all the "shelters" (many are now in private homes) and "agencies" that have adoptable dogs. Most in the shelters here ARE Pit Bull mixes of one kind or another, and Chihuahua's. You have to be diligent to find something other than that around here. We have three Terrier mix mutts, all which run just at 20 lbs apiece. Best dogs of ever!
