i know Fall is just around the corner...but it's never too early to get the truck gear box sorted and prepared for winter.
some items i keep in the truck all year.
since the in-cab storage is next to nothing compared to my 2015 F150... a second swing case was a must.
the Genius boost resides in a cubby under rear seat, along with gloves, dude wipes and other misc essentials.
of all the gear i carry in the swing cases, i think the Smittybilt tire plug kit, viair compressor and snatch & tow straps are the best things to carry (besides the obvious flashlights and gloves)
so share some pics of your gear/tool boxes :sunglasses:

I'm not going to drag out my whole box of stuff.. :) I'm doing this from memory:

I carry a rubbermaid box that is filled with tow straps, a comealong, gloves, a combo jump box/air compressor (for emergencies only really), some rope, a small shovel, a can of flat fixer, tarps, tire chains. Under the back seat I have cargo straps (both regular and ratchet) and a spider net.

Not much in the way of tools - maybe I need to add to my collection.... What is have is more geared towards making sure I can get unstuck and also tie down any loads I need to.

Nothing but a pair of jumper cables. We don't have winter here and as far as all the other stuff that's what roadside assistance is for. I've carried around enough stuff throughout the years and froze my a$$ off back in the N'east fixing stuff. Now that I'm older I just let roadside assistance handle it. Yeah I know sometimes it takes them a while to get to you but it's free and I'm getting lazy. :D

That only works if you have cell service available where you have a problem.... :)

True but out here it's one big flat sandbox! :tumbleweed: Unless you head up towards Flagstaff or the other higher areas I don't think I've ever been without service and even there it's pretty good. Probably just cursed myself now. :(

Cell service coverage continues to get better - places I never used to get service I can now at least get text messages out. And I've been surprised at some of the spots where I do get service.

Too many hills and valleys here to get good consistent coverage especially when I go hiking.

I carry a pair of latex gloves, just in case I have to move a desert tortoise off the roadway out of harms way:)

I keep the following in my truck:
  • gloves
  • tow strap
  • snatch block
  • soft shackle (x2)
  • d-ring shackle
  • spare winch hook
  • winch hook safety strap (x2)
  • winch remote control (wireless with wired socket cable)
  • tree saver strap
  • tie down straps (various)
  • bungee chords (various)
  • air-down tool
  • tire inflator
  • adjustable drop hitch
  • selection of hitch pins
  • boat plug, plug wrench, and boat key
  • dual band radio (x2)
  • combat IFAC (Individual First Aid Kit)
I need to add:
  • machete
  • another pair of gloves
  • toilette paper (see below for why!!!)
  • paper towels
  • fire extinguisher
  • another d-ring shackle
  • CB radio (on hand, need antenna and install)
This past weekend, I went on an all day off-road excursion with a group of Ford Rangers. On my way to the meet-up point, early Sunday morning, my body started sending the "last night's dinner is ready to exit" message. I was in the middle of no-where in North Georgia; there were no stops with bathrooms. I pushed on to the meet-up spot, the Chattahooche National Forrest National Fish Hatchery, knowing they had public restrooms. Upon arrival, I found the restrooms...

...behind locked gates!!!! I decided to drive back out the dirt road to the Baptist church I had passed, with my fingers crossed. Yes! They had bathrooms out back. I ran up and pulled open the door to find...

...a plywood box with a hole cut in the top, and NO TOILETTE PAPER!!!!

I held it for a long time after. And now I will be packing toilette paper in the truck for emergencies!

Hi Thom,

Not with Tito...he is mine and he must, by AZ law, remain in captivity. Now a wild tortoise in harms way...yep wear gloves... Mask is optional if you wish to remain anonymous to the wild tortoise.
BTW...when handling a wild tortoise...keep it very low to the ground as you move it....It will likely spook and release its bladder as a defensive measure...Their bladder is huge!

Extra blankets, snowshoes and coveralls and ice scraper/snow brush in the winter only, metal shovel, ax/hatchet, hand saw, tow/recovery strap and chain, water (and water filter), dehydrated food, backpacking cook stove, headlamp, flashlights, first aid kit, jump pack w/ included air compressor, jumper cables, tool kit, rags, multi-tool, come-along hand winch, hitch, bungies, ratchet straps, Paracord, maps, bug spray, sunscreen, rechargeable lantern, collapsible walking sticks, extra hats (both winter and summer variety), gloves (both work and winter variety), towel, NOAA weather radio, PLB (personal locator beacon).

It may seem like I'm over-prepared, but I've heard too many stories of people around this area being stranded and having to walk many many miles to get help because they weren't prepared. I've known some personally who unfortunately didn't make it. So I take this survival safety stuff seriously, especially in the winter.

I will also second the lack of cell coverage concern. So many places around here with either no, or very spotty, cell service. Definitely not something you can count on. I have a Garmin two-way satellite communicator on the list, but haven't purchase it yet.
