No, it's done as you drive.
NO! There is a VERY specific drive cycle spelled out to train the transmission, that is to be done whenever the transmission is serviced. It does make adjustments later to compensate for wear. If, when and where this initial training happens is still a question.

The biggest misconception is that the transmissionission learns your DRIVING STYLE. What it learns is to adjust various parameters to account for manufacturing tolerances and wear to maintain a consistent driving quality.

Correct! You have to follow these instructions for the adaptive learning process.

https://gearsmagazine.com/magazine/the-more-you-know-about-the-10r80-the-better-off-you-are/

Perform the adaptive learning drive cycle on a level road surface as follows:

  1. Record, and then clear any DTC’s
  2. Drive the vehicle until the engine and transmission reach normal operating temperature.
  3. Accelerate from a stop with light throttle (15%), ensuring that upshifts 1st through 8th occur at engine speeds between 1300-1600 rpm.
  4. Continue to accelerate (may apply slightly more throttle after 7-8 upshift at 32-38 mph (51-61 km/h) until you achieve 55 mph (88 km/h) and the 8-9 and 9-10 shifts complete.
  5. Brake very gently to a complete stop and hold the foot brake for five (5) seconds.
  6. Shift the transmission to Neutral. Wait 1 second.
  7. Shift the transmission to Reverse. Wait 2 seconds.
  8. Shift the transmission to Neutral. Wait 1 second.
  9. Shift the transmission to Drive. Wait 2 seconds.
  10. Repeat Steps 3 through 9 six (6) additional times.
After the final step, place the vehicle in park and cycle the ignition key off. Wait 3-5 minutes before driving

What about 2nd gear?

I never did that , nor was told to , so either Ford or the Dealer would have to , or it never got done...

My plan is to save the settings, reset the transmission, drive to validate the settings, if shifts are crisp and clean, save settings again, then disable learning. If a problem appears reload last know good setting.

That's the accelerated method. Something the dealership should do on the test drive after clearing your memory or doing other work to it. Or something you should do after doing the same (ie battery disconnect for whatever)
When a trans is built, lets hope they have a test rig that they put the slushbox on for initial settings of the data.
Otherwise, its a process that waits until a parameter can be stored. That sketchy little bit here, little bit there probably isn't an efficient or accurate process and likely causes more grief than anything.

I plan to clear the learned parameters and keep it from adapting again. My truck always shifts best right after resetting adaptations.

Don't need no stinking 10 speed! I am quite happy with 5 or 6.
Seriously 10 is way to much. When I had my Jeep the 8sp was perfect and although I didn't have it long it shifted just fine and never lugged.

"7-8 upshift at 32-38 mph"

That's part of the problem with the trans programming. At those speeds, you are already and at 1:1 gear ration (7th) or the first overdrive (8th). Hence the sluggish, jerky feal of the truck.
Therefore, I exclusive drive with TOW mode enable. This pushes shift points to a higher RPM, and I believe doesn't skip gears. The only shift I feel is 1 -2, and 2-3, all others are buttery smooth.
MPG is still about 24 MPG.

I gave up on tow , the hills here in WV make it go crazy , 100% Sport mode for me now , shifts fine , up and down, took a little while to get used to that extra click to find reverse though... went from 19.9 to 19.7 , well worth it ...

AMEN! My only complaint is this transmission is not programmed for us hill folk!
