I've done a lot of stuff upgrade wise to my 23 Ranger. (I maxed out my motorcycle too lol) Intercooler, Exhaust, catch can, etc., etc. Now I'm thinking about upgrading to a larger Turbo.. I hear the one in it is tiny (Ford cost saving). Has anyone done this? Experiences?

I feel the stock turbo is pretty well matched for typical driving. Without an extensive set of mods like the entire intercooler/charge pipes upgrade and free flow exhaust - maybe even the bigger downpipe - a turbo swap might not provide the satisfaction you seek. I noticed there are differently configured levels of turbo swaps and some seem to require fuel delivery upgrades. Id expect shorter engine life for the extra fun and reduced fuel efficiency. You'd want the tune adjusted too.

I have indeed swapped for CFV Intercooler/Charge Pipes and I have SPD downpipe with Borla Exhaust. I guess I'll likely get more professional opinions but I probably won't do it. It's like over $2k I hear.. ouch

I hear our 10 speed transmission can handle at least 1,000+hp...go for it!

I have a Fast Mavericks 57mm upgrade. I am fully full bolt on with some custom made parts as well. You will probably want e30 if you upgrade the turbo to even benefit enough. The stock turbo is able to make more power than 93 octane can support as it is.

As for the OEM turbo being “tiny” because of cost savings that’s a big stretch . Borg Warner could easily have built it with a larger compressor wheel if Ford asked for it. Would not have made much of a cost difference due to the volume of that particular turbo that Ford buys. The aftermarket turbos are a stock turbo with a larger compressor wheel and the compressor housing machined to accept it. Some may add coatings to the housings also.

The size of the factory turbo was selected to optimize power in the low mid range where a truck needs power to do truck things. It certainly was not selected as a cost savings.

A larger turbo is going to move the power up in the rpm. It may ultimately give you more peak power at the expense of power down low and more turbo lag. If you use your truck as a truck it probably is not something you want to do.

Depends on what you are doing with the truck to try and justify the Turbocharger upgrade. Many Factory Turbochargers are matched to the Vehicle and Engine for what it's going to do most of the time which is Daily Driving. Yes that includes Towing as well. A small Turbocharger will spool up much faster than a big Turbocharger on the same engine. How.much faster you ask? Depends on the Turbochargers in question.

My suggestion, if you daily your truck(even with the occasional OffRoad Outing I say leave it be. If you have it build as a strait race vehicle(which I doubt BTW) then go for it.
