Transmission tech finally "diagnosed" my truck yesterday. They opened up a warrantee claim, so far they are suggesting a rebuild but won't know what they are really gonna do until the tech opens up the transmission. Good news is now that the claim is open they got me in a rental so I'm not riding my bike the 40 mile round trip commute I've done the past few days across Los Angeles 😴 its been quite the adventure. Bad news is i have a feeling i won't see my truck for another 4 weeks at least. Driving in the Ford Edge this morning really makes me miss my Ranger, especially with a camping trip on the books for July 4th weekend. If they were smart they would have loaned me a 6G raptor Im sure id figure out a way to trade up after some seat time.

Its only been a week and boy am I missing my truck. Sounds like the dealer is waiting on a torque converter to deliver estimated 7-10 days before they can start the rebuild.

I'm sorry to hear at only 47k miles.

I love and hate Ford's 10-speed. Why give it 10-speeds then program it to skip gears, go to the tallest gear available and lug the engine at steady state cruising or even at parking lot speeds? Why Ford??? If you're not going to use the 10 gears then why not just keep it at 7 gears? or 6? WTF!
The 10-speeds lazy programming has the gearbox going to top gear ASAP, therefore accelerating the wear on the clutches and generating a lot of heat.

Before I had her tuned, I would lock out the top 3 gears around town or hilly terrain. Sometimes I'd lock out the top 4 gears too. Ridiculous! In fact after the tune, with a more "assertive" shift logic, I still prefer to lock out the top 3 gears around town. It just feels more natural that way not to mention it's way more responsive when it stays away from gears 8, 9, 10!

Sounds like exactly what happened with mine. The dropping out of gear and slamming back in at freeway speeds is alarming to say the least! My dealer dropped the pan and said there was so much clutch wear material in the oil that they didn't bother with any further diagnostic and sent it for replacement.
As is said, "We want follow up!" Mysteries are not the thing of Forum members.

If you have never checked it before - from factory the cap may be tight - its a good idea to get it off while the engine is cold and then tighten it back up for a drive and heat up, you can use TJC testing method for fluid level when cold and varied temps - he took the time for some accurate measurements at varied trans fluid temps, just be aware that the dipstick cap is right next to the HOT exhaust. - much easier to do a preliminary cap removal when its cold as they have been known to be very tight on initial removal.
I don't believe the stock dipstick is long enough to check the fluid cold. And if you are following the Ford steps to measure the fluid, it is critical to have fluid in the 206F-215F range and that is not easy to achieve without a gauge.

One Ford mechanic says to start the truck and let it warm up and the fluid to the 5-6 block instead of the 4-5 block. This assumes fluid temp is between 140F-180F. I tested from a cold start and tracked fluid temperatures (see the chart below). On the day this check was performed It was 75F ambient air temp, with fluid measuring 77.4F. The truck has sat in my garage for 12 hours from shutoff.

Time Window for targeting the 5-6 window is 17:50 - 37:20. 160F was hit at the 25:50 mark. Or you can wait 11: 30 minutes and fill to the first diamond (120F)

Here is the Ford Dipstick with the temp indicators on it.
Wait 11:30 to check and fill to the 120F point (the first diamond).
Or 17:50 to fill to the 6.
Or 37:20 to fill to the 5

update: my truck has been at the dealership for a month now. a week just to be diagnosed, then waiting on parts. last week when I checked in i was told maybe done by wed or Friday but then didn't get any reply on Thursday. I had requested to have my battery either put on a tender or started periodically since i knew it could be sitting for a month, I got a alert that my battery had entered power saving mode on the ford pass app and that was my tipping point.
I was pretty upset with no response from the previous week and now my newer battery drained so I drove over to check on things in person. The service advisor showed me the parts list they ordered and that they have been delivered. The SA figured I likely got the power saving mode because they disconnected the battery since I received the warning the same day the parts arrived. I honestly was skeptical so I said I needed to get something out of my truck while I was there just to see with my own eyes. It was in fact on the lift, transmission taken out and battery disconnected. It felt like seeing a loved one hooked up to all those tubes in the hospital. I am hopeful it should all be wrapped up sometime this week. I really am sick of driving the loaner and can't wait to get my truck back.

My service advisor is great but shes been pretty transparent how backed up and understaffed they are. She did say the transmission techs are really good and they poached them from another dealership. Not sure how much of that is smoke up my a$$ to make me feel better and feel sorry for her but its working.

The dealership I used typically has a 2-3 month wait for appointments for transmission diagnosis, which given my experience, I now understand why. If you do not have an extended warranty, get one or consider trading it off after the warranty runs out as the transmission replacements are not cheap. Hopefully you’ll have better luck than I did with the replacement.

Whoa, I have the Ford ESP on my Ranger, but a 2-3 month wait to have a transmission diagnosis would be a nightmare. things like this really make me question the value of the Ford ESP. So lets just say the transmission needs major work. So, 2 or 3 months for the dealer to diagnose; then time for Ford to approve a warranty repair; then time for the dealer to gather the parts; then time to rebuild the transmission. With this dealer you are probably looking at a minimum of 2.5 - 3 months. 4 or 5 months may be possible. IMO, this would render the Ford ESP useless. At this point, paying a private garage $5-$6k to rebuild the trans may not be out of the question. Even if the dealer turned the repair around in 2.5 months, the rental car cost would be over $3k. Can't image what would happen if my truck was gone for 4 months.

Ford may be dragging their feet... running out the clock.

Sorry I should have been clearer, it’s 2-3 months to get an appointment for a diagnosis since they have such a backlog. They supposedly had mine diagnosed the day I dropped it off but I didn’t find out until a couple days later because they were waiting to hear from the extended warranty company before contacting me.
