Tow longevity

Towed this. It’s over 5,000 lbs guessing around 6000? over 5,000 miles. Pre-maturely wore the spark plugs.
The drive was not very comfortable.
I added new suspension, ford 91 tune, mishimoto intercooler, tow mirrors and of course a damper. Now I hardly notice it.

I did tow mirrors, and just because I didn’t like the ride driving around, blue Sumo’s and Bilstein 4600’s on the rear. Otherwise it’s stock on the mechanicals and tows my travel trailer, cargo trailer, and for shorter runs, a 7K dump trailer just fine. Haven’t found any reason to do anything else. The damper I have mixed feelings about. Sometimes I like it, and sometimes it’s annoyingly slow.

My in-laws moved from San Antonio, TX to Wilmington, OH using their '19 Ranger. Their trailer was loaded to just slightly under 7,000 lbs and that one trip was almost 1,300 miles. Their Ranger was running just fine when it was rear-ended at high speed and rolled 1.5 times.

I do not believe your coworker is a smart person, at least when it comes to trucks.

Edit to add, the in-laws were OK and have another Ranger now. And since they no longer live near me and won't be accused of copying me, they finally got the blue one they wanted in the first place!

I have a coworker that insists the Ranger 4 cylinder boosted engine will blow up within 500 miles with a 7000 pound trailer being towed.

He’s actually a pretty smart person. Can anyone share some real world experience?



Curious? Has your really smart buddy ever been tested for retardation?
Do you think a manufacturer with the exception of Chrysler would build a vehicle that would bankrupt them in warranty claims!

Tell your co-worker it's time he went back to engineering school. Today's 4 bangers are not the same units from a 1974 pinto. Not are today's automatics to be confused with the old 2 speed powerglides.

I tow heavy in the steep hill of west central Virginia. I've shown the pic before, but here it is again. 26' Carolina Skiff Ultra Elite, Suzuki 300HP, 5 lead acid batts. Latest gross tow.weight is 6200 pounds. Regularly tow 300.miles each way.

I didn't read through the whole thread, but in my years of towing it boils down to DONT push the truck, and do your maintenance. Sure it could do 70 up that grade but guaranteed it'll be much happier in the end doing 55. Engineers know what works on paper, 7k works on paper but only if you respect it. It's still a light duty truck, treat it as such, and don't expect there won't be a cost in the end to (more than) doubling the overall weight of your vehicle.

Correct, still had to change the oil and respect the mechanical limits of the vehicle, Cummins or ecoboost.

that is also why you need trailer brakes to tow that 7500 pounds surge or electric, without trailer brakes it is a lot less rating.

Not quite as close to payload, but I moved to Colorado from Florida with my stock ranger + camper shell. Had everything I owned (that I could fit) in the bed of the truck and in a tandem axle 15ft U-Haul trailer w/ surge brakes, I estimate about 5000lbs total. Truck barely broke a sweat, temps were rock solid throughout and it handled crossing the Smokey Mountains and windy Kansas without issue.

My only gripe with towing in the Ranger is the gas tank size. Towing on a stock Ranger will give you in the low-mid teens gas mileage wise, 18 gallons doesn't go very far with that sorta mileage.

That all being said, my Ranger is now very modified and much heavier than stock, I just made the trip to Florida and back for the holidays. Looking back, I may have gotten better mileage stock+towing than I did with no trailer and loaded with my cold weather camping gear.

This has confused me under weight for some time.

The equipment, I think, includes 70 lbs for a hitch. If you have a 100 lbs hitch, do you only add 30 lbs hitch weight to payload and allow 70 lbs to tongue weight or is it still all 100 lbs to hitch weight and payload?
