I used to keep a pretty extensive tool bag in my trucks. Now, I keep just the essentials. Flashlight, sledgehammer, bow and arrow, bear trap, condoms, box of cookies, a map, a broom, paper towels, and some chop sticks.

I keep a small Kobalt set in there under the seat. It's like a 40 piece set of basic sockets, 2 extentions an a selection of screwdriver an torx bits an a handle. It's more for when I visit my kids that have no tools in the house an they pick up something that needs assembled an stuff like that.

So this forum is about carrying tools in your vehicle. So if yu are traveling along a freeway somewhere, you are going to change a Starter or a hose or a belt or a water pump right along the freeway? Are you going to take all those spare parts with you also?
BTW, I haven't had a belt or a hose go out on a vehicle since th 80s. What the heck do you do that you have belts and hoses go out on you?
depends on the person. a person like me yes. Ive changed parts on the side of the road a few times. folks that have spent much time off road or in out of the way places carry stuff for inconveniences and minor emergencies. no i would not carry any parts, id just troll the net and be smug bout it till the stuff i needed showed up.

Let's be real - when it comes to tools, many times it's about building out the kit and less about the utility. I know a few guys where researching and buying tools is a hobby. They may never use them but the search and building is the fun part! As a bonus, they have tools 'just in case'.

I carry a few things in my box because I can. I may never use them for myself but there is a chance I may be able to help someone else.

Hello all!

I have a 2019 Ranger Lariat FX4 (all stock), I’ve had it for 3 years now. Unfortunately, the factory warranty ended at the beginning of this year and I’m thinking it’s time to start handling the maintenance and repairs myself. Being a diy weekend mechanic is nothing new to me, although this is the newest vehicle I’ve owned especially with all the “tech”.

At any rate, I have a decent, yet relatively basic, selection of hand tools, air tools and power tools (drill, 1/4” impact driver and 1/2 impact). With that said. Are there any must have tools that are needed to work on the Ranger?

I just merged this with an older thread (They were mostly tools to carry in the truck) so you can look back at what others have recommended. It sounds like you have all the basics to perform normal maintenance but I'm sure someone will find something for you to buy. lol

I used to carry a ton of heavy tools and now just this...if by chance your battery dies either because it's gone bad or drained and your in the middle of nowhere...this can be a life saver...and helping others with the same...

You might want to consider these along with any others you’ve thought of…
  • Brake piston compression tool
  • Fuel line removal tool
  • Push pin removal tool
  • Code reader

Forscan - For code T/Shoot and Custom Changes - you desire

Oil Filter Socket (This Fits the Ranger Filter - Perfectly), the other brands slip on the filter due to design of the drive attach point (allows the extension) to push through to the filter.

These would be the MAIN additions to have on hand, there are others Ball Joint, Cooling System, Engine Work, but those can be obtained (if needed)
Edit: If doing Rear Brakes - The Piston (Compression) Tool (Can be rented)

Depends on what you're trying to do. Metric sockets, both deep and shallow, panel clip tool is nice to have, pitman arm puller is nice if you're doing any suspension work. Torque wrench is always good. I think the Axle nut is 35mm so maybe grab one of those for your impact. Big compressor to power said impact.

My favorite is probably an oil filter wrench. Worth every penny when you can loosen the filter with a ratchet from outside the wheel well.

I carry a flashlight, jumper cables, a Milwaukee 18volt impact and 19mm socket. On longer trips the torque wrench goes also. I'm too old and tired for the lug wrench.
