Too old to change oil ?

..until we are all driving electric

I plan to be the guy roaming the electric countryside on foot in my attempt to find a bit of gasoline someone missed back in the day. Then I'll return home with my cup of liquid treasure, filter the trash out of it, check it for water, and add it to the tank of my antique Ranger.

Then I'll go out back and have some more target practice. At Elon and Tesla logo pics.

Now, get off my lawn.

74 this Dec. Still change oil/filters/rotate tires, wash/wax two vehicles and maintain our travel trailer. Mow/trim/weed-eat yard every 5 days or so.
Usual aches n pains, but I consider myself "vintage" and not ready to be put up.

My father is 75, and he sold his boat this spring(before he told me he was going to) as in his words he is too old to bounce around on the lakes and rivers anymore.

he started building boats when he was 14. sunk more than a few he built, dove down to get his motors back, and then rebuilt the motors so he could build another. he was constantly tinkering with his engines. (and most boats still have carburetors).

at some point repeatedly fixing our own mistakes just gets old. and then just keeping up with stuff gets old, and then you realize you are the old one.

Back in the 70's there was a Mother Earth News article about this guy who made a "solar panel still" . He pumped the filtered mash up into these panels where it soaked into black canvas. The alcohol would evaporate and condense on the glass panels and get collected onto an aluminum channel.

It was a hoot. Anyhow little tip for when we go to hell in a handbasket mode.

I'm 63 and still change my own oil. Most of the quick change places I just don't trust.

I don't trust the oil change places, but I will trust my mechanic (he's been vetted). But the mechanic isn't going to change the oil in all the yard machines, so it makes little difference in my doing the vehicles as well.

The only problem with changing your own oil is getting rid of the spent oil.

I used to be able to take it to my mechanic. But this stopped when he re-located. I used to be able to exchange 5 gallon cooking oil containers at his shop. It was great. I think his brother's shop had a waste oil heater.

I then switched to PepBoys. But now they are closing locations near me and I have to sign a log when I drop the oil off....why? On occasion I've taken it to AdvanceAuto, but they don't like it when I bring a large amount (like 3 gallons).

There is a website I found recently that indicates certified recyclers in your area. Can't remember the name. Anyhow there is a new place close by I found that I am going to try this week.

Auto Zone, Advance Auto, O'Reilly's all take used oil. 'As for amount, I keep mine in an old 5 gallon gas container, when full I recycle it at any of several auto stores in my area and have never had one say anything about "5 gallons".
Even our local dump..."recycling center" has a dedicated holding tank for oil and another one for other fluids like coolant, tranny fluid, ect.

Same here. After changing the oil in my three vehicles in September, I have about 4.5 gallons. I usually take the used oil to AutoZone (sometimes to O'Reilly's). I never have had any problem with them taking all of the oil.

I think it depends on where you are at. I'm just a little north of Philly. But I think if you are blessed being away from more populated areas it might be easier.

I live in Massachusetts, any establishment that sells oil is required to take waste oil for recycling. The only issue I have ever had is AutoZone refused to take it because I didn't have receipt showing I bought the oil from them. Walmart doesn't care and takes what ever you bring back so that is where I go.

I buy all my oil in 5 qt jugs (significantly cheaper that way) and use the jugs to collect the waste oil.

I use ramps and a creeper along with a Fumoto with a long hose to the pan. Did the driveway miss once and not happening again. Oh, 68 over here

F107SX has the longer stem for spacing it was from the pan cover.

I am 70 this September. I have the tools and the know how to do most of my own work if I so choose. However, when I weigh the time it takes, against the value of my time I find there are things I enjoy more and would rather do. So .. I take our vehicles to a stealership up the road. Would never buy a vehicle from them anymore but their quick lane has been doing my stuff for awhile now and always does a great job at what I consider a fair price, and they do it quicker than I can. So I pay them to do it. If I ever feel the urge I will pull the tools out and do it myself but no one should hold their breath waiting for that to happen

Thanks! Im trying to set it up with a tube I can just leave zip tied on and feed it through the bash plate below.

Any leaks with the Fumoto or any other issues?
