So first time I did, admittedly, cry wolf (thanks spark plug boot lol).

So we are at 82k miles - the sweet spot I guess?

This time unfortunately issues started happening with my wife and I in the truck on I10 heading to Florida for a weeks vacation.

P0766 was the code I pulled. Transmission fluid was at a good level. So that wasn't it. We pulled off at the bucees on I10 around Alabama and I cleared the codes and we relaxed for a bit.

Seemed to run fine after that. Of course we still have a drive back to Texas - about 900 miles give or take.

I am going to ask this as it seems, mostly, that the only fix is a full on rebuild or replacement. How are the rebuilt units holding up? And if a replacement, are there any issues noted on them?

Leads to a bad Shift Solenoid or Valve Body or CDF Drum as possible sources. - Svc Manual

That Code also falls into the TSB procedures

Don't sweat it...you have another 13,000 miles to save up for a replacement...which of course, would resets the warranty clock for another 3 years unlimited warranty...

Curiously...by "check fluid level ok"...how and under what conditions did you do this proceedure?

Installed a dipstick as well as a mishimoto pan as well as servicing the filter and a fluid swap at 65k.

I am assuming sarcasm. He is beyond the 60K warranty, so unless he has an ESP, he's out of pocket.
And what do you mean another 3 yrs. unlimited warranty? I'm not sure about this, but my guess, if Ford swaps trans, he'll probably get a one year warranty on the trans only.

Maybe...from personal experience, 10R80 has a hard expiration at 95K miles...with or without warranty... ?

So we made it home okay thankfully.

A few observations...after setting the code we pulled off and cleared the code. No issues through to Lake City, FL. That morning started out and started having some shifting issues after warming up. Pulled off at a rest stop and shut it off. Started back up and no issues. Ran all the way to our destination and no issues. However I noted that there was a film of, I am guessing, transmission fluid on my tailgate? Also there was a nice film of fluid on the underside of the truck. That was, from what I can find, a sign of either overtemp OR overfilling. I changed the pan, filter and installed the dipstick SIX MONTHS ago?!? I've driven it to work (45 minutes at 75) and to Austin twice (3.5 or so hours at 80 in spots on 290). There was no trans temp warning (if there is one? not sure?) Coming back home it had a few issues crop up - same weird shifting such as the RPM going way up as it upshifts to 10 then settles down. Downshifts feel like it was a damn big hammer hitting something. Now here is the the crazy thing - it was acting up and I was looking for a spot to pull off and give it a quick break the thing started shifting fine.

Its NOT going to the dealer. The geico MBI works pretty efficiently I found so its going to a shop my family has frequented quite a bit. They told me, instead of 3-4 months per the dealer, 1-2 weeks.

What in the wide wide world of sports is going on with this damn thing?

I don't think it's an over temp. It sounds like you have a leak, either in the pan gasket or the filler cap.
How's the fluid level now?

I'm afraid all that you've described are signs of immanent failure...at the last stages of my trans, it was slamming up/down into random gears with enough force for me to be very concerned for potential engine and drive line damage...I would park it until it can be serviced...

JUST got back from dropping it off at the shop. Told them, in vivid, gory detail, of what occurred.

As a side note - this was supposed to have been an "awesome" vacation for my wife and I. The transmission first then my sister is now ill and the cleaning ladies left our front door open and let out our cat on Wed and is still missing. :(

If you mean 180-195 range then your transmission is overfilled. Should be down around 5ish at that temperature. Stone cold 1 would be fairly normal but not at operational temps.

This, fluid was way too high.

I had the same thing happen to me, I was slightly too high, towing back from Florida. Shift flare from 9-10, pulled up torque and the trans temps had spiked to 250*. Slowed way down, temps came down. Stopped for gas, fluid all over the place.

Checked the fluid when I got home and it was right on the money, meaning it blew out what was overfilled.

If these things are overfilled, it seems like they start foaming the fluid and it causes all kinds of weird issues, including massively heating the fluid.
