One thing that’s intriguing about this transmission conundrum: Replacing the DPFE sensor is curing a lot of the problems that folks are getting their trannys repaired/replaced for? For now, I’ll continue to hope that’s the case and that I’m not sitting on a ticking time bomb.
I bought a DPFE sensor earlier this year and put it on the "I'll get to it sooner or later" shelf. Well, noticing a couple of minor quirks lately, not sure if it's the cold or what, but it always had a quirk or two. Now its cold as f*** outside, should have replaced that sensor sooner.

I'm considering trading my Ranger when I get it back from the transmission repair. Am I nuts for trading this pretty much (except for the aforementioned transmission repair)

I had transmission replaced at 84k miles. The second one is going strong with 109k miles on it.

I constantly think about trading, but then I see the cost of a new truck and remember mine is paid for and worst case scenario is I spend 6k +- on a new trans 😂
At 148,000 very lucky trouble free miles, I’m afraid to even think trading now and when I go in for service and walk around the lot and look at the window stIckers, my BP goes critical and I go back in and sit to wait till service is done. I like my paid for truck. A lot.

Obviously it’s not a magic cure for all the reported transmission problems, but it sure improved mine’s behavior. It is a pain in the butt to reach the tubing connections; if only the hood opened another inch!

Very good advice
I bought one of the very first Tacomas to come out in 1995. It was a beautiful cobalt blue, V6, five speed loaded. It was the biggest POS I ever owned and had nothing but problems eventually taking a $4000 loss to get rid of it.

Granted, I don't keep up with trim levels, other than what I read on here. It was my perception that the Tremor package was an upgrade from stock towards the Raptor, which is serious off roading. So, with that in my mind, I had to chuckle when I saw a Maverick Tremor... Maybe I'm wrong, Mavericks are off road capable.

Funny that you mentioned a Maverick Tremor, is that there is always one at Cracker Barrel in Sherman where Dad and I go out to eat every now and then. I guess it belongs to someone who works there.

The Maverick Tremor is what I’m looking at to get for my mom. Her little escape is falling apart at 240k miles.. she doesn’t want a suv or a car.. wants a truck, however my dad has severe mobility issues and the vehicle needs to be at a sweet spot height so he can get in and out of it.. (a ranger at stock height is just too high.).. my mom sat in my wife’s step dads 2025 xlt fx4 maverick and said ok I like this… I have a ranger tremor and thought it would be cool to get her a maverick tremor.. so that’s where I am with it.. (hopefully have her new vehicle around Christmas.. little buggers are hard to find the tremor trim..(close by atleast).
From being on the maverick forum.. the tremor mav isn’t too bad with light off road.. it’s not gonna do what the ranger can do but good enough for a hilly ranch with wash outs.. the mav tremor also has a rear locker equipped on its awd system. (The rear locker is specific to the maverick tremor.).

I’ve been looking at something 23,24 model years.

So far I’ve found GM puts a bigger turbo 4 cylinder in their mid size.
Ford wants to sell you the bigger motor.
GM 8 speed transmission
Ford 10 speed transmission

Tacoma brand new engine and still puts out less power and torque than ford or GM.
Tacoma still has that same shit fuel milage they are known for and the cult loves to defend.

That said, I found a 24 Tacoma I really want to buy! :p

Interest is insane right now as most know. Buying new almost makes more sense as the rates are a little better.

Issue I’m having now is full-size or midsize. We bought 10 acres and are building a house in the country. A small tractor is on the short list.
And with said tractor, you know I’m going to have to have a front bucket and the back hoe attachments! With everything I think I’d still be under the tow rating for a modern midsize.
But part of me says another f150 or 1500 makes more sense.

I've thought about trading mine multiple times but I always come back to the Ranger.

Now that Ford has finally rebuilt my transmission with all the "new and improved" parts, it has eased my mind about the biggest potential problem. Though it still shifts like crap sometimes.

I don't want a full size so those are out.

For mid size, I looked at a few other options and wasn't impressed enough to trade.

My Review Of The ZR2

Recently I towed my Bronco on a car hauler with total weight around 7K lbs.

No version of Tacoma or Frontier could have towed it.

The ZR2 Colorado or Ranger Raptor couldn't have towed it.

A new regular Ranger or Z71 Colorado could have done it, but I wasn't very impressed with those and certainly not enough to pay the difference in trade.

A Gladiator also could have towed it. But after my 2017 Fiat Wrangler it will be a looooooonnnnnngggggg time before I buy another Fiat.

When my Bronco is finished, it may become my truck and I may trade my Ranger.

Until then, I'm still with my Ranger (though I do still occasionally have thoughts about that terrific looking blue ZR2 Colorado)

This is pretty much the set up I’m looking at.
Around a 25 hp tractor, most likely a pull behind mower deck.
Is your truck all stock as far as towing?
I was even thinking an aluminum trailer for weight savings.
Bone stock except I went up two tire sizes.
