They get you with the add-ons. I got a 4x4 Lariat with the tow package and 501A package for $38k. If you want to save money avoid paying for appearance (sport package, wheel packages, chrome package, black package, upgraded paint) and only buy the Fx4 if you are really seriously going to off road. I personally think the Lariat package under $40k is a decent value but it depends on what you want from your truck. I wanted a fast, comfortable, capable daily driver that could tow and haul and deal with light offroading.
I'm thinking about just grabbing an XLT, and getting leather seats later. I really only want the Lariat for the leather and better sound system, I can do both aftermarket. But I will also wait until June rolls around to see if we get any new rebates. But I have the itch now, and this Mustang of mine is rapidly depreciating lol.

Another 3rd gen Tacoma owner here impatiently waiting for my new Ranger to be built. The 2 advantages the Tacoma has over the Ranger, from my perspective, are off road capability (I'm not an off road guy at all), and they look better. Once you test drive the Ranger, you won't be able to wait to get one. It is light years ahead of the ancient Tacoma power train and technology. I think that you should get away from the 3rd gen Tacoma ASAP. Once more and more Tacoma owners test drive Rangers, you're going to see a TON of them on used car lots. Can't wait to get rid of this dumpster fire drivetrain!!

Did my second test drive of a Ranger vs Tacoma today. The Ranger is the more comfortable vehicle and the power train is a lot better.

The Double Cab TRD Off Road with Premium and Tech package is a lot cheaper than the Lariat I drove though.
It's also more equivalent to an XLT...

I originally was thinking of a Tacoma but I kept hearing about how the new ones are always running near redline. After a test drive in the Ranger I changed my mind and went Ford. The 2.3 has ample power and is always in the right gear. After 1 month of ownership I'm totally convinced I made the right choice.

I have to say Ford did a good job with the Ranger. The 2.3 with 10 speed auto is a winner in my opinion, I can honestly say it never has to over rev to produce power. This is my first new vehicle in years and I'm impressed by it.

Was originally planning on an XLT but purchased a Lariat. The extras are what sold me, especially the LED lighting and tech packages.

Congrats! What color did you get? You won't be disappointed.
Ended up with Magnetic. It was between that and the ignot silver. Was going to do the silver bc it had the cheaper 17 inch wheels. Upon closer inspection the hood had a paint chip and a bubble in the paint about the size of a pencil eraser. Also, the passenger door was dented. So after expressing my disappointment, I was able to get the identical magnetic, but with the 18’s for almost the same price.

I was surprised at how well the Ranger handles at speeds over 70. Passing, hills etc isn't a issue. Its peppy. Its not Fusion Sport 2.7L peppy but it does okay. It also corners better than I thought it would. No worries.
