Not only are they not diodes, but they are also not axial. But I guess if they knew what a diode was, they probably would know what axial means.

They might have a tiny diode in them, often used to indicate a good fuse. Sure would be a pain to try and get that diode out though.

Those are non-binary diodes. They let the current go both ways.

Those are LEDs - Light Emitting Diodes. If you put enough current through them, they light up, though not for very long...
