ICE will never be able to accelerate like an Electric. Think "Roller Coaster FUN"

Yes we will miss the look feel and smell of a big V8, but push yopu DEEP into your seat acceleration is addicting
Each to their own.
I have been in a number of fast E vehicles..... That push you deep in your seat is fun, but got old for me pretty quick with out the feel of an ICE. Yea, E might be "faster".... but too me, not as fun. Just my point of view.

I wander what size of battery is required, and where would you put it?

I would like to do this but on a more...interesting scale...either an old 1978 Ford Courier or better yet a Ford Pinto wagon. :)

This thing looks completely insane and I would buy one in a heartbeat.

This is very appealing to someone, like me, who drives a nice modern 2020 Ranger half the time and a restored 87 GMC Squarebody 4x4 the other half. Love my ole Square but the stark contrast between the two in every conceivable aspect of operation is continually increasing as the years pass. 11 mpg, $150 tune-ups every few years, constant slight leaks, NVH levels that seem to increase (as I grow accustomed to ever lowering NVH levels in new vehicles), and continual "fear" that she will leave me on the shoulder (from aging components that are generally only a concern on a 35+ year old vehicle). An electric conversion for this puppy will be in my Eventual future. It's an heirloom vehicle that I will never get rid of and I want to be able to get it out and enjoy it, and even depend on it to do almost anything a newer truck can do. The good ole V8 sound from the FX Flowmasters will be ALL that I will miss..

Just curious about what other things need to be considered/converted in these projects - power steering, a/c, vacuum-driven items, etc. Do these new electric crate motors still manage all that or are further conversions needed to accommodate these other systems? A heater core conversion is clearly needed but what else?

Yes. I think that the battery pack is the biggest achilles heel of the whole EV and EV conversion thing. The size and weight of the battery packs make retrofitting ICE vehicles very limited. Look at the K5 example in your article. A normally 5 passenger - plus lots of gear - utility vehicle, is transformed into basically a battery carrier for a useless 2 seat behemoth, which now weighs 1000 pounds more and carries a lot less. And the notion that EV’s are being pushed as these “earth saving” green machines of the future, is just a huge lie. This, of course, is my opinion but I’m sure to get an earful to set me straight.

Lithium use is on the way out. There are other supposedly better materials on the horizon that will replace it. Batteries are the biggest drawback or item that has to progress/change in order for electric to be viable.

Yes, all mining is devastating and changes are needed. At first I thought that image of a tarsands site might have been taken during week one of operation. On second glance, I see it‘s likely a site in Saskatchewan.

You really need to look to Alberta for a more accurate representation of a tarsands site.

Ironically, these mining trucks will likely be autonomous electric vehicles one day.

for the amount of oil that the tar sands pulls out, it's not a really large area overall. you can see the 20km scale on the lower right.

pictures of reclaimed sites are abundant on the internet, and include the tar sands as well as many other extraction sites dotted across the provinces.
I have no doubts that we can effectively get the natural resources we need, and wean ourselves off of it with improved technologies and processes, including how we burn it into other energies, without having to throw every world economy into a tailspin to make Greta and Al Gore happy.
Just look at what are beloved Prime Sinister Justin Trudeau promised at this recent environmental gathering. he's literally shutting Canada down. But run with that lithium mine in Quebec eh Justin?
I don't doubt we have a global warming issue, but it cant be fixed in our generation. it will take as much time to reverse it, than it took to create it if not longer. But if everyone can do their part, it will be less painful overall for everyone concerned. So we lose a few toads and frogs along the way, evolution will create new creatures more accustomed to hot weather.
Scorpions will be common place in Winnipeg. I wont have to travel to Florida in January for warm weather. I'm cool with that.
Well, they can’t mine asbestos anymore, so, you know…?

Did you say Dave was coming to the Peg? Nice.
