Guy on right...no damper, a he-man drop and slam using brute strength.
Guy on left...has a damper installed, leading to loss of muscle and manliness.
For info, I have a damper, and resemble the guy on left....

To be fair I resemble the right. But I don’t let it slam lol

I thought about getting a damper because it seemed logical. When I told my daughter who was 11 at the time she said it’s not even heavy and will probably be to slow. Needless to say I’m still damper free lol.

Here in Canada when it gets around -10 to-20C, the damper is slow as molasses, other than that no complaints
It doesn’t get quite that cold here in PA but sometimes not to far from it. Does it have to get that cold to have an affect

Sure comes in handy when you got your arms full. Open the tailgate with one finger and it lowers to open position without slamming open. Well worth that alone.

And why would I have my arms full walking to my truck? They invented shopping carts for that very reason. If I don't need a shopping cart I don't need to use the box and the back seat is good for holding a couple bags of groceries.

I was thinking of tools and other stuff I use around the farm, but groceries I always accept the challenge of carrying as many plastic bags on one hand as possible so I can avoid the shopping cart with the wobbly wheel. ?

The damper adds a tad bit of resistance on the upstroke, so you get more of a work out closing it. ;) But yeah, arms full of stuff and the damper comes in really handy. Those who say they never had a damper on their old full sized truck never had the option. And who cares what it looks like, you can't see it when the gate's closed. It's cheap and easy to install and if you don't like it (never) you can just pop it off.

I haul stuff other than groceries to my truck all the time. Gas cans, trash bags, work out stuff, bikes, kayaking stuff you name it.

I bought a damper when I first got my truck. I read a lot of reviews and carefully considered the competition (Tacoma, colorado etc.) but ultimately decided on the ranger.

The tailgate damper was my 1st aftermarket purchase. It was cheap and easy to instal. It's funny now that I think of it... all the online reviewers of the ranger seemed a little bent out of shape that it didn't have a damper (they all mentioned how the Tacoma did).

Anyway, I was in the mood to play with my truck and my tools so I bought one.

I will say that it is a little over-rated and definitely not a "must have".

I don't regret putting one in... nothing bad has happened as a result. I'm fine with it.

But if I knew then what I know now I would instead put that money towards getting a break controller installed, maybe.

That's my opinion anyway.

Same here, strollers, totes, work gear that was foul smelling and needed a washing, next week I will have a box full of luggage for vacation. Never needed a damper, again hand works perfectly fine. Not hard to put down any of said objects and open the tailgate and then pickup said objects to put in box.

No, winter in ID slows it down too. Coldest the truck saw last year was -4 F
