If I were in your situation, I would just install an aftermarket radio system based on Android.
agreed. I wouldn't necessarily be set on an oem sync3 head unit. I'd look for something with wireless connectivity built in. the basic 4" screen doesn't have nearly the vehicle integration as the sync3 system, so a swap to something else makes more sense.

I won't be able to use the factory back up camera or steering wheel controls without splicing into wires. It'll be my luck that I'll cut the one for the front sensors or front facing camera (for auto emergency braking I think?)
that's not entirely true. you should be able to get a harness/adapter that will carry over all of those functions. there are even aftermarket head units which keep a bunch of the sync3 vehicle integration controls for people who have that head unit and want to switch.

Interesting, I haven't come across that yet. Crutchfield had a warning that involved splicing wires to get features to work, which is why I didn't think there was a harness for aftermarket units. Do you know where I might find the wiring harnesses you speak of?

Possible. At the time of the test drive though I didn't have my phone charger with me and when the screen mentioned mobile apps, I thought that meant it had carplay which is my fault for assuming. Otherwise, the radio works fine for my uses.

That looks like the radio in mine. My Ranger was built in January of 2019 though, so a full year prior to the Covid pandemic. As for the after market radio, cost wise is very much appealing but from what I can tell, I won't be able to use the factory back up camera or steering wheel controls without splicing into wires. There is a product....
... ah, it was already linked to you. :)

I went hunting for previous year model information, and I was wrong. In 2019 Sync3 was standard on the 301A and 302A XLT, not the 300A. Also, interestingly enough, you could only add Sync3 to the 300A if it was a fleet build with option 58M.

Well at least mine seems to have a good amount of safety features to make the insurance company happy. I do appreciate the help and knowledge regardless!

I have a 2019 XL and also would like to upgrade to the 8" touch screen, without the pricey kit from 4DTECH.

Please post any progress you make on this.

I currently have it on the back burner due to school and some trips I’ve got planned but I’m going to do the aftermarket route due to affordability and the near enough oem look we can get. Currently, I’m using a silicon phone stand on the tray in the dashboard and works well enough for now.
