Another stupid question, how do I get the gear to show up? Since I was hitting the +/- button.
In S mode once you hit the + it should show up on the left screen on the dash. You'll see the tach and the gear number will be right in the middle in red.

It will also show up in drive. It will not show up in sport mode. As we said before, once you hit the +/- in S mode, the truck will be put in to 'select' mode. The gear indicator will show on the dashboard, indicating you are in 'select' mode and no longer in 'sport' mode. It's then up to you to up/down shift using +/-. There's no way to get it to show gears in 'sport' mode.

YES... I do hit that, I thought I had to show the gear number. Ah that makes sense!

THANK YOU!!
It's not really to show the gear number, while in Drive it it's for locking out gears you don't want the truck using, good in hills where you find the truck wanting to shift too much or for engine braking on down hills. Side effect of using the lockout is that it shows the current gear and the allowed top gear. In Sport though it switches to a manual control, I think you can switch back to auto mode while still in Sport by holding the (+) button for a moment until the gear indicator disappears on the cluster.

As for the 7k rpm, that may be ok.... I know with the 2.3l in the RS there is a 10 or 15 second window you can over the lower redline before the PCM will force you back down to the lower redline. It is possible that that logic still exists in the Ranger.

lol I did the same the first time I used S mode. I must of hit the =/- by accident and it went right up to red line. I'm yelling SHIFT and finally realized it was my dumb mistake. Like Doug said as long as you don't touch the +/- it will shift by itself and if you hit them and want to get out of manual mode just press and hold it and it'll return auto shift.
Not gonna lie, it took me 3 or 4 times to figure out not to hit +/- buttons. I was like, sport mode is dumb. Nope, just me. lol

I can't seem to use SPORT Mode. When it SPORT MODE it doesn't feel like it wants to shift. I've used it maybe 5 times in the past 2 years because of this.

Today I tried it and it took the truck to redline, doesn't matter if I have a heavy or light foot. In Drive it shifts fine.

Then after work I though I would try it again... Nope, 7,000 RPM the tach showed, which is 1000 over the redline. I did an OH SHIT as I took my foot off the gas and popped it into drive. So these motors have no overrev limit either? I haven't had a vehicle without a rev limiter since high school (yes I am old). Weird!
The Tachometer has 3 zones, safe up to 6K, note so safe 6-65K, and redline, 65K+. Rev limiter kicks in @ 6500K. Needle may go past that but the system is killing power by perhaps killing spark. That is fine as peak HP is @ 55k RPM and peak torque @ 3k RPM
