Hey everyone, I’m looking at replacing my spark plugs as I’m reaching 100k miles on my 2019 Ranger. I’d like to know how necessary do the boots need to be changed out? What am I looking for that would determine they should be replaced? Any help or info is greatly appreciated!

The plug boots are part of the coil packs (4)...at that mileage, you might want to preventative maintain replacement of those too...

If the Aftermarket has them available I would change just the boots. If not it's your call if you replace the coils since they are expensive.

Also as an idea spray some penetrating oil down each plug hole the night before you go to change them and let them soak. That will help with the removal of the plugs

ive never had to spray anything down to the spark plugs thank god, but i usually take an air gun and spray around and inside before taking it out, and some anti seize on them goin back in with some di-electric grease on the boot opening and where it meets with the valve cover.
Psure the ranger has two piece boots/coils. If the boots look ok and arent swollen/cracked no need to replace them, but its a not(edit) bad idea to do so. Coils should last a decent bit, if you do replace them stick with OEM. Ive seen people run into issues with aftermarket coils.
On the ecoboost motors ive been swapping plugs every 30k, i feel like these motors are hard on them. Every other motor i do 50-75k unless its NA. Thankfully most ecos are super easy to change out.

I believe the recommendation for the penetrating oil is VERY valid on a Ranger based on its history of having its plug wells filled with water , sometimes the dealers cant even get them out and have to replace the head...

Still just nuts to think about that. Replace the head. Over plugs. Who'd have thought it?

Keep meaning to check that on mine.

As for washing it... I'm fully into my "older guy that no longer enjoys washing vehicles" mode. Got it in late February. Washed it a week later. Period. I wipe down the interior. And I clean windows. Very anal about maintenance. Washing? Not so much.

Needs washing now. Yep. Sure does need a wash. Yea it is dirty. Could stand a wash. Yea...

Got a 4 day weekend coming up for the 4th. Will it get it's first oil change? Oh yea! Got everything sitting there waiting. Looking forward to it actually. Rotated the tires 2-3 weeks ago. Will it get a wash next weekend? Hmmm.... sure is dirty. Could use a wash.

Wash huh? Well, I'll commit to "we'll see."

Yeah, I remember the first time I changed the oil in Ol' Ferd The Fantastic Ford....I came out on the other side of it all, but it was touch and go for a while there....

If you are doing it yourself, I'm glad you have a 4 day weekend coming up, it's tighter than a mouse's ear in there.

I would also suggest that you do whatever it takes to find your Zen space and be prepared to go there several times in your head as you try to remove the OG filter that was presumably tightened by an Orangutan on PCP, who had so far only been trained on the righty-tighty part of the equation. Ugh.

Godspeed to you, let us know it all goes...:fingerscrossed:

OP - Please post pics of 100k spark plugs when you end up doing it

Would like to see how they look. Changed mine at 17k to colder plugs, going to swap them in about 10k when I hit 50k

tightened by an Orangutan on PCP,
Reminds of the first time that I changed the oil on my Focus ST. Had to completely destroy the filter to get it off. Ridiculous.

Hopefully the Ranger goes smoothly. Did buy a wrench for the filter. First time I have ever bought one of those. Thanks to this forum btw! Gonna try to do it without removing the tire. Fingers crossed.

Do the plugs boots seal the hole?
