I am quite certain that the folks who did the oil change I received a few weeks back added too much oil. I checked it cold, after sitting level all night, and the oil is 3/8 of an inch above the full dot. I will be draining and correcting it in a few minutes. At about the same time I had the oil change done, I began to experience poor engine performance which I believe is linked to a fault in my emissions system (rough idle at startup, improves when car warms up).

My question to all you fine ladies and gents is this: Doesn't putting too much oil into a vehicle cause oil mist to contaminate the car's EGR system? If so, what should I look to replace / clean after I fix what the oil change idiots screwed up? Thanks in advance.

I’m not saying they didn’t over fill it or you don’t have a problem, but the procedure I believe is to bring up to temp, turn off and let sit for 15 minutes, then check (it’s in the manual, double check that). May want to try that just in case to avoid any unnecessary work/expense.

The fact that there was too much oil is not in question, thank you. I am looking for comments other Ranger owners might be able to relate regarding the effect too much oil would have to the Emissions system. .

Yes the correct oil level is to be checked when there is still oil coating all the internals for proper lubrication when running. If a vehicle sits long enough for all oil to drain back into the pan it will generally show higher than the dipstick full mark.

My truck is routinely 1-2 quarts overfull, due to fuel contamination, and Ford has told me it is not an issue. Every oil change is 6.2 qts in, and ~8.2-8.3qts out. I have approximately ~55k miles on the truck and I am sure for the majority of that, the oil level was well over a quart high, and it still seems to be running fine. Ford did give up throwing parts at it and extended my powertrain warranty to 7yrs/100K.

I overfilled mine a few oil changes back about 3/8" on the stick as you described, doubt that it was anywhere near a qt, closer to .5 qt, noticed zero I'll effects save for it making more difficult to empty the oil collection pan , it's 30 yrs old and was full to the brim. I'd leave it as is. The pcv system channels crank vapors back into the intake stream so I don't get the correlation to screwing up the egr sensors, it's a p*ss poor component design that creates the issue all by itself.

on my ranger I do see it over the top dot not enough to matter and checking it over the last 4 months it has not changed so I am happy its not using oil LOL smells good and looks clean, it has 6k on it but its still a pretty new truck I have 19k on it now and still happy with this truck over all...
now in the past on all my V8 and V6 I would run it 3/8s over and never had an issue, but the older POS I owned in the past were a much different engine?
