What would be the best recommended ODB-II ? Forscan tool for our 2019-2021 Rangers?
I've had several simple ODB-II plug in tools for my former vehicle to troubleshoot and clear codes, howerer I never previously owned a "SMART" vehicle with so much technology. I'm looking for the best tool for this vehicle. I've never used Forscan but plan to learn it to potentially make simple changes and identify issues should they pop up. I'm very technical savvy as I previously was a VP in Infomation Technology at a bank. I'm also very mechnical savvy as I worked on vehicles all of my life. But these days I don't do any engine rebuilding stuff. I keep it to standard maintenance stuff like oil changes, brake changes, shocks and links. I'll replace componence identified by ODB-II codes. I'm 67 and never needed a dealer service that I could not do myself.
But that is likely to change due to the complexity of these verhicles. A good diagnostic tool can still save me money if the issue identified is a simple component change I can do myself and clear the code afterwords.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've seen several tools on Amazon but I would like the one most recommended by the forum participants here.
Thanks.

I have at least 3 of these readers. The one I trust with Forscan is the one Dave has listed. It’s also the one Forscan recommends on their Wiki page

Because I use mine with the Torque Pro app to display additional guages, I use a Bluetooth one. I have the ODBLink MX.

Alot of people don't like to go wireless for Forscan changes. If you do go wireless, don't go cheap. Get a good one, you can't go wrong with any of the ODBLink ones. IMHO

I have an MX one too. That I used paired with my phone or iPad for gauges that we can’t normally see. Good for reading codes while out and about if one does happen to occur.

This scan tool:
Amazon.com: OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner for iPhone, Android, and Windows: Automotive
is on sale for 79.99 today and tomorrow. It's typically 120.00.
Seems like a great deal.
The scan tool most recommended by this form is the following:
Amazon.com: OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter: Automotive
This one is not on sale and currently goes for 50.00.

It seems to me that I should jump on the one on sale. What does everyone else think?
Strange, the link shows me it's $99.99.

IMO, I use mine a few times and then may never use it again, or at least not very often. I spent $25. Not saying what you should do, but for me mine is fine.

ADDED: This is the one I have. You have to change the switch position sometimes, so it would probably be nice to have the $50 unit but not necessary.

I highly recommend using wired type for Forscan changes. They even state this on the Wiki page. The wifi could hose your unit. For reading codes, additional gauges etc the wifi is perfect for that.

They had a deal going last November and I got a $26 coupon off of whatever the price was on the cable. Ended up being $33.95.

I ended up purchasing the MX+ (Bluetooth) model. Yes, it's overkill for what I will probably need. However, since it's both Android and Windows compatable, I like the fact that I don't have to lug my laptop into my truck if I don't want to. Also, the direct link model via USB cable only supports USB 2 which is slow and fast becomming obsolete. The MX+ gives me more flexibility.

Gotten interested in pehaps using Forscan. I would be using a Windows 7 laptop.

What cable/connector is recommended, one that will do the most.
What version of the software will do the most? Are all versions free?
Anything else a newbe needs to know?

Thanks for all the input.

You probably need to upgrade to WIN 10. That is just a guess?? You need a OBD II connector. There is a mega thread on all of this just use the search feature.
