I would surely use an 'assist' handle every time I get in the truck. It is especially useful when you have some difficulty with your mobility due to knee replacement.Where I'm from that #4 is called a "Chicken Bar" so by definition it is only for passengers!
I think they are really needed for the back seat on either body.
On the other hand... As a fleet mechanic I often saw broken GM steering columns from drivers using the wheel to hoist themselves into the driver's seat. They could have really have used a good sturdy grab handle by any name.
