Great bike Jacob! I always loved my KX's and they always ran great too.

Meh, age is only a number, enjoy your youth to the fullest!! I did and don't regret one minute of it. Even now at (almost) 58 I still do as much as possible, just a little slower at times. lol
ya its a great bike and since its a drz400 in green plastics its a tank! i crashed this bike and it still runs fine it does leak a tad bit of oil now because the dang stator cover came loose again...(two broken off bolts in the case so i need to drill them out) but other then that its great! im gonna be doing the 3x3 mod soon so ill get a bit more power out of it!

thats true! its just odd coming from the civic forum and tacoma forums where most were close ish to my age (27 here soon) to coming to this forum where most are 40s and up haha

i full intend to try and enjoy it the best i can but man things be pricey! from house payment to fuel to every day things! and now i gotta do a new truck build from scratch again haha so the bike is my escape besides camping

First bike was a Honda 50 Mini Trail when I was 12 or 13-ish. Didn’t run, paid $50 back in 1970-something. Earned the $$ mowing lawns.
My parents thought “That’ll keep him busy all winter trying to get it running.”
Rode it out of the yard and down the street that afternoon. :)

My first bike was a 74 cz175 dad took me to the bike shop and they put the crate in the back of his pickup. He said if your going to ride, you have to learn to work on them. And of we went, put it together and rode the wheels off of it for two weeks. Dad got tired of me not keeping up so he decided it was time for me to move up. On to the 75 laverda 750 sf2. Man what a rocket that was. 130 mph at 15: years old. So many bikes ( somewhere around 40) later and this is what I ride now.
Photo 2 is the wife and I on a mountain ride. Granddaughter in pic with me.

well today was a fun ride into work! my klx was low on fuel and i knew that but i wasnt to far from the gas station and i had reserve so i really wasnt worried about it tbh! buuuuuut it turns out my reserve isnt working... as i was riding along i felt the bike chug for a sec so i switched it to reserve because i was about 2miles ish from the gas station so i wasnt worried but the bike completely shut off and wouldnt start it tried to but it wouldnt so off i went pushing my bike..... got to ride down a hill! but that was short lived as it was a bowl and i had to then push it up a steep hill and made it to the top walked about half a mile and saw a dude working on some old ford drag car and asked if i could just have a tad bit of gas to see if it will start? the dude was super friendly and use to race dirt bikes and came over and took a look at my bike for me and gave me some gas! we couldnt see any issue besides the fact the reserve wasn't working for some reason but we could hear the little bit of gas down in there??? i offered to give him some cash for helping me but he said no need to worry about it and have a good day! i was late to work but i still made it in thanks to him!

thing i learned is dont trust the reserve on a 19 something year old bike!

anyone else do something this dumb lmao

Been on reserve and said I'll fuel up on the way home, ha ha didn't even make it to work. Getting too old never run below a half tank anymore.
haha i wish i could see how much fuel i have but dual sports have nothing besides the miles on the bike so i have to keep track and sometimes i forget

I was 9 and my Dad came home from work one day with a rusted ole mini bike frame. Together we took a 3 horse Briggs off a tiller and w a new centrifugal clutch and twist throttle and some work there I was blasting around at 20 mph and I was hooked! Later I had a Honda XR 80, then a Honda 200 Fat Cat, Honda 200 Big Red 3 wheeler death machine (bought out of a field from an ole man who parked it when his grandkid had a minor wreck on it), and a Honda Recon 250 4 wheeler.

In my 30s I hit the street on an Ultra Classic, 883 Sportster (only rider in world history to go in That order!) 1200 Sportster, Heritage Softail, Honda Rebel 750, all black Goldwing, and a Yamaha V-Star 950 (one of my favorites).

Would love to now own an Africa Twin or Pan America!

Local dealership has a couple KTM Duke 390s.

I've ridden a bit. Mostly on dirt. But this would be the first bike I've owned. Thoughts on this bike for a noob who wants a bit of fun and a cheap commute? Other bikes to check out?

I learned to ride on a Triumph Tiger Cub at 10 or 11 in the early 60's. In High School I had a 58 Harley Duo Glide then went on to dirt bikes and Moto Crossing (Ossa, Bultaco, Harley 2 stroke). Worked in a Kawasaki Shop till I got drafted in 72. Those Mach III's and Mach IV's were wicked. After the Army had a Honda Elsinore 250 and Honda MR 175, then a 77 Kawasaki 650, an 83 Honda Interceptor and a 96 Honda VFR 750. Kinda got burnt out and sold the VFR and haven't ridden since.

ive heard those are good bikes but rather gutless so most get rid of them quick after learning if i were you id look at the ninja 400 it has a decent amount of power and rides good they even have the z400 if you still want a naked bike

Good points. I definitely prefer the look of a naked bike over something with full fairings. But I also don't think I'd be too picky in that regard. I'm more concerned with the way something works than the way it looks.

What kind of performance is left on the table from the factory with bikes? Similar to cars in that 10%ish power gains are easily attained through the aftermarket? Or is it a more intricate endeavor?

Also, what's the market like nowadays? I'd imagine it's stupid like everything else. If not more so.

Thanks for entertaining my questions.

Summer of 1963, my very first ride was on the back of a Cushman Eagle. It belonged to a fiend or relative of a neighborhood kid. I was 13. Offered the kid a cigarette, but he still would'nt let me ride it solo. First real MC ride was in my senior year, and the older guy from across the street bought a new Triumph Bonneville upon returning from Viet Nam. begged and borrowed several other bikes until I got my 1976 Honda CB 550 My first bike, and as a newbie I was unfamiliar with how fast tires wear compared to cars. I took off in the summer of 1978 for Maine with the rear wear bars clearly showing, figuring they would last until I got home. 300 miles into the trip the rear blew out. The new tire took good chunk of my money, and the rest of the three week trip was very frugal. I sold that bike the following year to buy a wedding ring for my new bride. Still married to her! Bikeless until '81 when I bought a new 1980 Kawasaki KZ 750, the "E" model, which was the forefather of the GPZ. Everybody wanted the metric cruiser-style 750 LTD, and the dealer was only too happy to get rid of the oddball "E": $2995 retail, I rode away for 2 grand all up out the door; set up, tax , title included.
I still have that bike, although it's in pieces right now as I'm s l o w l y refurbishing it. Bought a new 2001 Kawasaki ZX11 in '02. Last year for carburetors. At the time it was the fastest production bike sold in the US. Had that until 2018 when I bought my current 2017 Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS (DL 650).
after som fifty-odd years of riding all over the upper Mississippi Drifless area's paved roads, I wanted something more gravel capable than a crotch rocket.

I don't have any digital photos of my CB550, this is off the internet:
