I got a set of splined lug nuts in black as part of my chrome delete project. Got a few done when I took a closer look. The bearing surface that contacts the wheel is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the factory lug nuts. I feel it should contact the full length of the available wheel surface, so I put the old ones back on. Thoughts?

Return them and get new ones with a bigger surface area.
Somewhere here there's a lugnut thread that takes a deep dive into all the whys of it.

Thanks, I decided to do that a little while ago. It just felt wrong. There is a lot of junk out there, opted for the FPP part to be sure. I will search for that thread for my own education.

When I replaced my lugs I had the same question. But I was assured I had the right ones and so far have not had any issues. By the pic, if you look closely on the original, it looks like it doesn't make contact any further than what the replacement would. The original looks overly big due it being a 2 piece design, and requires extra material to cover the base metal.
These are what I am using:

Those look better than what I got, longer cone. The splined ones set deep enough in the wheel, I could see bare aluminum. I think the ones I got were for steel wheels.

The important thing is you need a shoulder with 60 degrees. I have black McGard lugs, they are 60 degrees, the recommended replacement, but are slightly smaller than stock so they tend to tighten themselves up quite a bit, as in I twisted the end off a Harbor Freight breaker bar trying to get them off. Ford Accessories has stock shape black lug nuts but they cost a crap-ton of money, more than McGards.

You might want to get a quality torque wrench involved. As to the breaker bar, Harbor Freight is the Harbor Freight of tools so there's that.

Harbor Freight is the Harbor Freight of tools, so you might want to get a quality torque wrench and a quality breaker bar involved before you go any further. Based on anecdotal evidence along with a rather epic tool failure that I still bear the scars from I believe that their products are hammered out by drunken Orcs looking for a way to repurpose their leftover slag.

I did get a free replacement. 3/8" and I had a 2' cheater pipe on the end, so there's that....
I'm looking at some heavy duty lug wrenches on Amazon to keep in the truck. When I broke the breaker bar I was just at home trying to rotate the tires.

Absolute worst thing to use on lug nuts, especially the OEM two piece ones. Torqueing unevenly can also warp brake rotors and crack alloy wheels.

I've been using the long splined lugnuts for past 130K miles...no issues...
