I tried replacing my transmission fluid by myself today. As I was unbolting the pan, I dropped one of the 8mm bolts into a hole on top of the crossmember. I tried fishing it out with a magnet, with no luck. I've also been searching the internet all night looking for a part number and a replacement.

Does anyone have a part number for a replacement bolt? Any suggestions on how to get the original bolt out of the crossmember would also be appreciated!

Could you support the transmission with a jack and remove the crossmember to shake the missing bolt out?

Take a bolt to a Ford dealer or a hardware store to match it.

I ordered a super strong magnet on Amazon. It should be arriving by tomorrow. I'll try my luck fishing for the bolt again. If it doesn't work I'll try ordering one of those bolts.

Thank you!!

Since I am not sure here.

Did you check the other bolts if they were magnetic?

I have used the following methods, and they work

If you have an air compressor - Blow Gun, to blow it out of its hiding spot.

Smack the crossmember with a hammer to bounce the bolt enough to move it to a visible spot, listen for a rattle

Once out of the hiding spot, and no way to blow it out through an open hole, then magnet, mechanical fingers or hand finger it out of a hole.

Before ordering the bolt, if it comes to that, you may want to double check the part number with Benny at Levittown Ford. That diagram I linked to was for a Mustang 10R80 and it may or may not be a different number.

I did a quick check, yes, they are magnetic, and looking at the cross-member it should be fairly easy to get it out - once it is located. Normally they like to hide around an attach nut of the cross-member.

UPDATE:
First of all, I love this forum. A huge thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions.

Before receiving the magnet from Amazon, I tried banging on the crossmember with a rubber mallet. I could hear the bolt ratting inside, but still couldn’t locate it. The magnet fishing WORKED! I was able to “drag” the bolt with the super strong magnet to the lower hole to where I could finally see it. I grabbed a second smaller magnet from the refrigerator door, tied a piece of twine to it, and lowered it through the upper hole of the crossmember. The bolt stuck to the refrigerator magnet and came right out!

Been there. Know the exact hole it fell it too. I was lucky to fish it out easily with a small retractor magnet.

Without seeing the cross member you could also try to wad up some good duct take and see if you can press it down onto it.
