As long as you can be patient I would suggest holding off on adding an additional tank. How long you have to be patient? I have no idea.
i’d love an off the shelf option. Not my first rodeo with fuel cells. It’s not that hard to do, but not that easy either. I was all in with LR but months are passing. To be clear, I’d be building a cell that completely replaces the factory tank. Not a transfer tank.

fingers crossed that LR comes through but I’m starting to do my ownresearch

Trust me, I understand the wait. To say the least I was the one who got it started with LRA. I can promise that things are still in the works and if things go well soon then we should be golden. Also just so you are aware once the tank becomes available it will still be an easy 6 month lead time from order due to build to order and shipping from Australia

someone may have already posted this so ignore if they have.
i do camping and overland trips with my ranger and wanted extra fuel on hand just in case. running out in the middle of no where or off road really sucks... I got a marine above deck tank for about 100 dollars. be sure to get a good one with a prime bulb hose set up and a vent. i got a decent siphon hose with a bulb etc. when i get low on gas i stop run the siphon hose from the extra tank to the filler adapter thing for the cap less set up, squeeze the bulb a few times and the gas goes into the truck tank. it takes several minutes but it gives me a chance to drain the bladder and stretch my knees out. cheap easy and safe. way less than a transfer tank and you can get them in many sizes from a few gallons to more than you would want. oh, a good setup to secure it in the bed is needed of course. i use simple ratchet straps to tie downs in the bed. been off road many miles no issues. one time i forgot to open the little vent and when i noticed and opened it up after bashing around the trail of course gas and vapor went spewing out at high velocity. re learned my lesson.

Good idea on the Marine tank. I just ended up bringing two Jerry cans when I am towing to unknown areas where the gas stations may be tricky to predict.

This is something I've considered in the past. Glad to hear it's working for you.

I'm going to assume with covid, lack of supplies and epa issues this idea will be dead in the water... ?

That’s what I understand as well. Spoke to LR a few weeks ago and it’s all up in the air. I’m starting to look around for other options such as a full custom fuel cell. My milage drops into the single digits pushing a head wind over mount passes. This bring ls my useable rang down to as low as 150 miles.

i have a baja trip planned and my fuel situation is a mess.
I added two of these the other day: https://www.trailedonline.com/product-page/4runner-and-tacoma-6-gallon-spare-tank-2-pack

That's 12 gallons of additional fuel. I rarely need that much, but that one stretch between Baja Sur and Baja Norte...

"If needed, it is recommended to add protection, in some manner"
You'd have to be getting really, really gnarly in order to get something pointy enough and strong enough to penetrate a thick plastic tank tucked up between your frame rails. And it's likely you'd be damaging your truck in much more significant ways first. Two of these, stacked, are thinner than stock tire size.

Thanks Wes, I just ordered the Trail’d setup. We’ve got a spring Baja plan coming together and looks like the LR tank is a ways off. The Trail’d setup might actually be better for occasional use.

Looking at the design, I suspect fabbing up a skid plate would be super easy if one wanted a little extra protection.

I just use 2x 5 gallon Jerry cans ratchet strapped to the bed headboard along with my tool box. I have a spout that fits the capless filler so no funnel needed, and I added metal positive lock vents to the cans. 10 gallons is plenty of emergency fuel for my needs and only needed when in the desert as my bladder can only last 4 hours at a stretch in any case.

I don't have them loaded at the moment, but here is what I have, I also added 2X eye hooks to the extra holes in the front of the bed for the ratchet strap.

Vents - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZT3GPKR?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Spout that fits capless filler - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S42B8T9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Can caps to replace the stupid nozzle that calif requires - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0834F71BK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Cans - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007M4VRO?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

This works well, and only when I need it, and at a fraction of the cost of a built in tank. There are other options that are good, like the above deck marine tank, but it is not portable when filled, and I wanted something I could easily take out if I needed the bed space.

Here is a photo, the traction boards work well to give added protection to the cans, I didn't go with the tall military type cans as I have a bed cover.
