I'm wanting to put 265/70/17 tires on the XLT magnet colored rims, but having a hard time finding someone to install these "slightly" oversized tires. I tried one Discount tire store and the local Pep-boys. They both will only install factory size! What's going on?
I had zero problems going to that size at Discount Tire last week. They actually went above and beyond and were happy to switch my tires over.

What did you do about the spare?

When I worked for Discount Tire, the only vehicle we could not install anything but factory was the Explorer. You know, the one that rolled over and exploded a bunch. I have never heard of a DTC refusing to install a slightly oversized tire.

The local chain I go to will only install tires that match the sticker on the inside of the door. Even if I bought the performance package from the dealer that comes with the 17" wheels instead of the 18".

I bought their $120 light duty (3rd tier) all terrain in the new size, I can’t remember the name. It fit in the spares spot just fine. If I need it it’ll at least be the proper (new) size.

I am a big fan of Continental tires. Unfortunately the manufacturer has been out of the 255/65/17 tires in the Terrain ontact H/T's and I had to go with the 265/65/17 tires. Continental only makes the TERRAIN CONTACT H/T or A/T in our original size and at least a size bigger. I got mine done at Discount Tires because they are a national chain and gave me about the best price and it makes it easy for warranty work if I ever travel I need it. They also gave me $30 a tire for my bridge stones and gave me a free tire because it took them over a month to round up those Continental tires. So Discount Tire told me it would make about a mile an hour difference with my speedometer. I guess they looked it up on a chart. Between my odometer and my cruise control and my radar detector that displays my speed, it seems to be more like about a half a mile an hour because the radar detector bounces back-and-forth between two different speeds so I tend to think it is a half a mile an hour difference.
I went to the Ford dealership and asked the service advisor about putting bigger tires on and they are very much against it because they said the output shaft from the transmission would wear out but the size I was going with wouldn't make much of a difference and shouldn't hurt it.That might be why your dealer won't put bigger tires on besides a possible liability issue?

We will certainly install 265/70R-17 sized tires on the 17x8 XLT wheels, as long as the tires are properly load rated, which nearly all the models offered in this size are. We apologize if you were told otherwise and would like to help further - PM coming your way.
Thank you Matt for reaching out to me. I've used Discount tires for many years & they've been great. I plan to continue to give them our business in the future as well

Seems like half the trucks on the road have big tires, so shouldnt be that hard to find a shop that will do it.

Like several others have said, no problem at all having my local Discount Tire install 265/70/17 on the stock magnetic rims either.
Late to the thread, but same for me as well -- my local Discount Tire put my 265/70/R17 Coopers on my stock Sport / Magnetic wheels and then later moved them over to the Icon Vector 6 wheels they ordered in for me. So yeah, it seems a little off that they won't do this.

I have the 16" spare an I looked up a 265/75/16 an it was the same diameter as a 265/70/17 in the tire I was looking at. You can also get a plain 17" steel wheel off ebay for under a hundred bucks.

I used to order tires and wheels from your website all the time but this time I had to order from Tire Rack because your site would not let me order larger tires and wheels for my Ranger. I was trying to order 285/70/17. I was able to order them on Tire Rack's site shipped, mounted and balanced.

Both my Ram 1500 4X4 & Tacoma 4X4 were ordered new from the factory with oversized tires. Wal-Mart would not put that size tires back on as the sticker in the door jam did not show the upgraded tire size. Luckily I still had the window stickers that came from both trucks, showed the stickers to the Wal-mart manager & he then OK'd the install. Gosh, Rules, Rules, Rules, Regulations, Regulations, Regulations, will it never end???
