Need to set truck on jack stands. If put them on the frame rails thy will be in the way. I usually put them in the rear on the rear axle and in the front on the frame rails. i see where I could them put on the frame in front of the front axle is that ok? Is the rear axle also ok?

Just. concerned about the effect on the front drive train in particular.

Thanks

Not sure about in front of the front axle, but the rear axle is the recommended jack point in the owners manual I believe.

I just did this yesterday...jacked up one corner until tire is off ground to remove then lower down onto one jack...go to the other side and repeat...then go to the back and lift the axle/tires from the center diff until both tires off the ground...remove wheels/tires then lower onto two rear jack stands...

I've done similar to Sid, but a slightly different approach because I went much higher, with 3" clearance under the tires.

I do the rear first to take advantage of the free rolling front wheels, which reduces lateral load on the jack. The axle sits in the concave section of the jack stand, and allows for easier pivot when I lift the front, without torquing the stands.

The front I lift from the front most cross member (at the rear of the front skid plate). My preferred jack stand placement is under the lower control arms, unless I am working near the wheels, which I will use the front cross member, the second cross member, or the frame rails, depending on the job.

The method I use is recommended to use wheeled floor jack, not the factory jack, and keep it inline with the truck, so it has the ability to roll and stay centered under the load.

Short answer, yes the cross members should be fine to support the vehicle, but try to keep them near the outside as much as practical.

With my method, the maximum height of the stands are no where near high enough to remove tires and that's why I take off the tires while they're lifted by the jack...then I lowered them onto the stands...putting them back on, I jack up high enough to require another inch to meet the lugs...slide a long pry bar under the tire and lever them up to hang on the studs...this makes hanging 33" monsters piece of cake....

Is this on purpose or because your jackstands are too short?

I don't have a problem removing my rear tires on a jackstand at all.

I think one of the best jack stands for the money is by Esco. They are rated at 3 tons and have a wide tripod stance with flat support plates for the feet. In addition, they are adjusted via a locking pin and have removable rubber pads. I've used these for years on many vehicles. I can easily get all 4 tires off the ground by placing them under the frame since they get over 21" in height. Amazon has them here.

Unless my 8 short stands get stolen, I can't justify buying another set for my truck...yes, I have to lower truck onto the stands after removing the tire but there's no effort in that...even if I had tall stands, the truck would still have to lifted off of them as would with a short stand...so I don't see much benefit of a tall stand...except if one's planning on crawling underneath to work...in that case, I'd prefer doing that with truck sitting on the tires...

More of a quality of life thing, but do like me. I put two blocks of 4x6 together side by side and put those under the jacks to get me more height.

4x6 posts take about 21,000lbs to reach failure point.
