Been watching tfl since before i bought my ranger jan 2021. Watched the videos of the ranger before i bought the ranger too. I like the tfl dudes and the ike gaunler is a pretty good test too. Ive driven that in an old 1980 f250 pickup truck. No towing. It can be a tough road for any vehicle just by itself. Lol

To be fair, up until now EVs have been dinky little boxes that barely fit 4 people...if that. The Lightning is the first pick up that is in the EV category. And now everyone expects it to be the do-all and be-all of the EV world.
It's going to take some time and some better battery tech to get to the point of towing long distances.
Can it tow? Sure, and a hell of a lot more than any other electric vehicle. But it's still no match for long hauling.

FWIW, I have been doing some consulting for the company I retired from last year. They asked me to go to Syracuse NY to help out at that plant at the beginning of June.

Anyway one of the new Revian EV pickups went flying by me on the way home. About a 100 miles latter I needed a pee break and pulled into a rest stop and there was the Revian plugged in. The passenger was sleeping and the driver was sitting in the driver's seat looking quite impatient. ?

On a side note the Tremor got 24.2 mpg on the way out and and 23.9 mpg on the way home. Both ways the low fuel light never came on for the 352 mile one way trip. Wish my bladder had that range! ?

I followed up with, "just OK?" and he said, "Yes, just OK. I mean, I like the truck, but you do have to make adjustments to your routine when you get one."

He went on to explain that the range was a disappointment to him. He also said he found himself having to keep the range issue in mind pretty much all the time. He said with gasoline engines, for the most part, you just go until you need gas. With an EV, he said range planning was a daily process.

It definitely sounded like he had a little bit of a miss between his daily use needs and what the truck was optimized to address.

I personally wasn't blown away with the styling of the Rivian. I would likely wait for a Lightning if I just had to go EV.

With the race for EV domination ramping up the range of the batteries is going to improve greatly over the next 5 years. We may not like it, but by 2030 it's going to be difficult to find an ice vehicle to buy anywhere unless it's used. Instead of gas stations being built, you'll see EV stations put up and the infrastructure will improve. We didn't convert from the horse and buggy to the automobile overnight, it took a decade plus and at that time there were zero paved roads to drive on. I understand the towing side of things but that will improve. Be honest, how many of you drive more than 300 mi in a day anyway?

EV trucks are only practical for a handful of truck owners IMO.
EV cars however are a phenomenal choice for the average commuter that drives back and forth to work every day whether it be 10 miles or 150 miles round trip.
Tens of millions of gas powered vehicles could be replaced.
The US is just to large for EV's to be used in a lot of other typical gas powered applications right now.

Wasn't the Rivian available before the Lightning ? The Rivian is off road capble - high clearance and fast - some models do 0 to 60 in 3.0 secs. Last Saturday a guy pulled up in one at a trailhead, it's a bigger truck than I expected, color was that shade of combat green that Tacos and Frontiers have. And in conversing with the owner - he loves it. Link to a site giving info on all the EVs and hybrids - prices, range, 0 to 60 etc. There are more of these things currently out than I realized. I felt the Rivian had decent styling but the front grill is definately different.

True, but the Rivian is a new company and I don't see them putting out quantities like Ford will do with the F-150.

Can the Rivian tow a camper equivalent or better than the Ford?

Rivian is the same. Same tow distance too. Electric just cant tow any kind of long distance with weight. Any elecyric vehicle. To include tesla.

I would love to have an electric car!
But still need my Ranger for hauling, towing and date night

If you can sit in the vehicle with the HVAC going while charging that's good But lets face it how boring is that going to be just sitting there for over an hour, 45 minutes only gets you to 75%.

I've said it many times that EV's will be great for SOME who daily drive short commutes but for MOST of us they're just not practical yet. Upgrading the whole counties grid is going to cost billions and someone (us) will be paying for this through much higher rates and taxes. While it needs to be done at some point, lets do it gradual as most can't even afford to put food on the table right now with this inflation let alone heat their homes come winter.
Exactly my thoughts from the get go. Also thought it's common logic, but unfortunately some peeps have zero foresight. Yet they call themselves progressives
